However, times change, and a century later, the first meaning of “Black Friday” has been forgotten.

In the 50-60-is of the XX century, the police of Philadelphia began to use it to designate… traffic jams. Every year on the Friday after Thanksgiving, the city was filled with people who wanted to buy New Year’s gifts. They caused traffic congestion and crowds in shops, provoking the discontent of police officers.

So, the period after Thanksgiving and before Christmas is the most lucrative for store owners. Therefore, back in the 60s, businessmen thought about giving the expression “Black Friday” a new, more positive meaning. In Philadelphia, advertising campaigns were carried out that aimed to create a positive image of the event. “The best day of the year to go shopping with the family” – this is how the media described Black Friday.

There was even an attempt to rename “Black Friday” to “Big Friday” to draw a parallel with the huge discounts, but the new name did not catch on.

What now?

Currently, Black Friday has gone beyond the boundaries of the state of Philadelphia: similar promotions can be found all over the world. However, this event is still the largest in the United States. Black Friday has been a host of entertainment events such as the famous Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade in New York. The event was first organized in 1924 to bring visitors to Macy’s department store the next day, Black Friday.
