Discord Takes Major Step to Block Malware Distribution and Cybercrime Activities

Discord

Discord has announced a monumental policy change coming by the end of 2023 that will dramatically impact how its platform can be exploited for malicious purposes. The company will implement temporary file links that fully expire after only 24 hours for all Discord users.

This massive change will effectively prevent attackers from using Discord’s expansive content delivery network (CDN) to indefinitely host and distribute harmful malware payloads. The short 24-hour lifetime will curb the spread of malware.

According to Discord itself, this landmark update will greatly empower its safety team to restrict access to dangerous, flagged content. It will also substantially reduce the overall amount of malware able to be distributed using the company’s far-reaching CDN infrastructure. New Expiration Parameters Already Added to Links

Although the authentication enforcement update has not yet been rolled out officially, Discord revealed that expiration timestamps and unique signatures have already been added to links.

Once the new policy is live, these parameters will be strictly enforced. Any links shared outside of Discord servers will become invalid after 24 hours.

The company explained that the links currently contain three special parameters – an expiration timestamp, unique signature, and hash. The signature will remain valid until expiration, controlling access. Additionally, you can also read about- How to Create Roles in Discord? [Step-By-Step Image Guide]

Extremely Positive Progress in the Nonstop Fight Against Cybercrime

This monumental expiration of file links represents phenomenally positive progress in Discord’s endless fight against the use of its platform for cybercrime operations. Discord servers have infamously been misused for many years to spread malware payloads and steal sensitive data.

Despite increasing rates of abuse recently, Discord has faced immense challenges in limiting the large-scale impact of these cybercriminal activities on its servers. Disturbingly, research indicates Discord CDN URLs have enabled over 10,000 sophisticated malware attacks.

However, this new policy of expiring links after 24 hours will dramatically undermine malware operations. It is a truly gigantic leap forward in Discord’s constant battle to curb the misuse of its servers for illegal and harmful malware activities.
