Does Doxycycline Treat UTI? 10 Severe Side Effects to Deal With

Does doxycycline treat uti

Listen to the Podcast:

Doxycycline is used to treat bacterial illnesses like pneumonia and other infections of the lungs. Urinary tract infections (UTIs) are among the most prevalent infections that affect humans. However, does Doxycycline treat UTI?

Bacteria typically cause UTI. They can affect any region of the urinary system, including the urethra, bladder, ureters, and kidneys. If left untreated, UTIs can result in severe complications such as kidney damage, sepsis, and other life-threatening conditions. The good news is that antibiotics such as doxycycline can treat UTIs.

This article will examine the efficacy of doxycycline in treating UTIs and its dosage, adverse effects, and other pertinent information. Continue reading to learn more about doxycycline’s role in treating UTIs.

What is a Urinary Tract Infection (UTI)?

urinary tract information

A urinary tract infection (UTI) is an infection that affects any portion of the urinary system. This system consists of the kidneys, ureters, bladder, and urethra. The majority of urinary tract infections affect the bladder and urethra.

Women are more likely to develop a urinary tract infection than males. When confined to the bladder, an infection can be painful and irritating. However, severe health complications can occur if a UTI extends to the kidneys.

Urinary tract infections are frequently treated with antibiotics. You can also take measures to reduce the likelihood of developing a UTI in the first place.

What is Doxycycline?

doxycycline

Doxycycline is a tetracycline antibiotic with anti-inflammatory properties that inhibits bacterial proliferation. Numerous bacterial infections, including acne, urinary and respiratory tract infections, ocular infections, gum disease, gonorrhea, chlamydia, and syphilis, are treated with doxycycline. Additionally, it can be utilized to prevent malaria and cure infections brought on by mites, ticks, or lice.

Types of Urinary Tract Infections

Each type of urinary tract infection may manifest with distinct symptoms. The symptoms depend on the afflicted portion of the urinary tract.

Part of the urinary tract affected Signs and symptoms
Kidneys Back or side pain

High fever

Shaking and chills

Nausea

Vomiting

Urethra Burning with urination

Discharge

Bladder Pelvic pressure

Lower belly discomfort

Frequent, painful urination

Blood in urine

Symptoms

UTIs do not usually result in symptoms. When they do, they may include the following:

  • Urge to urinate that is persistent
  • A scorching sensation when urinating
  • Urinating frequently and passing just small volumes of urine
  • Urine that appears hazy
  • pee that is crimson, bright pink, or cola-colored indicates the presence of blood in the pee.
  • Urine that smells strongly
  • Pelvic pain in women, especially in the center of the pelvis and around the pubic bone.

UTIs in older persons may be neglected or misdiagnosed as other illnesses.

How do Antibiotics Treat a UTI?

Urinary tract infections (UTIs) can be caused by various microorganisms, such as bacteria and fungi. In uncommon instances, viruses can induce a UTI. However, bacterial UTIs are the most prevalent.

Most individuals associate a UTI with a bladder infection (cystitis). However, there are numerous UTIs, such as kidney infections (pyelonephritis) and urethral infections (urethritis).

If bacteria cause the UTI, antibiotics are the only treatment option. Antibiotics for UTIs either prevent the growth of bacteria or eliminate them.

Remember that antibiotics can only treat UTIs and other bacterial infections. Antibiotics are ineffective against viral or fungal UTIs.

Does Doxycycline Treat Uti?

Doxycycline is used to treat bacterial illnesses, like urinary tract infections (UTIs), and it works well. It works by stopping the bacteria from making the proteins they need to live and make more bacteria.

Several studies have shown that doxycycline works well to treat UTIs. For example, a case study about a 70-year-old man with a history of repeated UTIs told how he was treated and how doxycycline finally worked.

After being diagnosed with a urinary tract infection, the patient was initially treated with ciprofloxacin, one of the most potent antibiotics to treat UTIs. Unfortunately, this also carries the potential for more severe adverse effects.

Two days after treatment with ciprofloxacin, the patient’s symptoms persisted, so his physicians switched him to amoxicillin/clavulanate. The patient’s urine culture was positive for E. coli and MDR, ESBL-positive K pneumonia the following day. The patient was then prescribed doxycycline, and his symptoms began to improve.

Doxycycline is frequently a second-line treatment for urinary tract infections, depending on the variety of bacteria causing the infection. It is particularly effective against complicated UTIs caused by multiple pathogens due to its broad spectrum of activity and low toxicity, despite its ability to attain high urine concentrations.

However, if a virus causes a UTI, doxycycline will not be an effective treatment.

Dosage of Doxycycline for UTI Treatment

When it comes to using doxycycline to treat a urinary tract infection (UTI), the typical dose will rely on many things, such as the severity of the infection, the person’s age, and overall health. In general, though, the usual dose of doxycycline for a UTI is 100 mg twice daily for 7 to 10 days.

Doxycycline Side Effects

Get emergency medical help if you experience any of the following symptoms of an allergic reaction to doxycycline: hives, difficulty breathing, swelling of the face or throat, or a severe skin reaction: fever, sore throat, burning in your eyes, skin pain, a red or purple skin rash that causes blistering and peeling and spreads rapidly.

Seek medical attention if you experience a severe drug reaction affecting multiple body regions. There may be a skin rash, fever, swollen glands, flu-like symptoms, muscle pains, severe weakness, peculiar bruising, or yellowing of the skin or eyes. This reaction may occur several weeks after doxycycline treatment has begun.

Doxycycline may cause serious side effects. Call your doctor at once if you have the following:

  • Extreme abdominal pain and diarrhea that is either watery or crimson.
  • Throat inflammation and difficulty swallowing.
  • Chest discomfort, an irregular heartbeat, and shortness of breath.
  • little or no urination
  • Symptoms of low white blood cell counts include fever, chills, swollen glands, and body pains.
  • Weakness, pale skin, superficial bruising, or bleeding.
  • Vision problems, severe headaches, ear ringing, vertigo, and nausea.
  • Issues and discomfort behind your eyes.
  • Loss of appetite and upper abdominal discomfort (which may radiate to the back).
  • Weakness, nausea or vomiting, rapid heart rate, dark urine, and jaundice (yellowing of the skin or eyes) are symptoms of jaundice.

Common side effects of doxycycline may include:

  • mild diarrhea
  • skin rash or itching
  • darkened skin color
  • nausea and vomiting
  • upset stomach
  • loss of appetite
  • vaginal itching or discharge.

This is not an exhaustive list of possible adverse effects; others may occur, and even doxycycline ruined my life rather than cured my illness. Consult your physician for advice regarding side effects. You may contact the FDA at 1-800-FDA-1088 to report side effects.

How Long Do You Need to Take Antibiotics to Treat a UTI?

The duration of antibiotic treatment for a UTI depends on the severity of the infection and the antibiotic prescribed. Some medications, such as fosfomycin, require only a single dose. However, a more severe UTI may necessitate treatment for at least 14 days. Most UTIs require therapy for three to seven days.

Your UTI symptoms will likely begin to subside within the first one to two days of commencing antibiotics. If your UTI is more severe or you’ve had symptoms before taking antibiotics, observing improvement may take a few extra days.

Taking all the antibiotics prescribed is essential, even if you begin to feel better before they are finished. Early discontinuation of antibiotics can contribute to antibiotic resistance, meaning that the medication may not work as well in the future if you need to treat an infection. It can also indicate that your UTI may return if you have not thoroughly treated it.

What Other Medications Treat UTIs?

People who experience severe adverse effects from doxycycline may benefit from using other medications to treat their UTI. Numerous antibiotics are on the market, and many treat UTIs effectively.

Urinary tract infections, which can cause a frequent need to urinate and discomfort when doing so, are sometimes treated with antibiotics.

Urinary tract infections, which can cause a frequent need to urinate and discomfort when doing so, are sometimes treated with antibiotics.

Other antibiotics, such as nitrofurantoin, ciprofloxacin, trimethoprim, or fosfomycin, may be prescribed by a physician. Although these medications may cause adverse effects, they may not be as severe or prevalent in patients who cannot take doxycycline.

How Much Will It Cost to Treat a UTI With Doxycycline?

Several factors, including brand name and insurance coverage, determine antibiotic costs.

The administration will also impact the price. The cost would likely increase if the antibiotic were administered in an emergency room or intravenously. This is yet another reason why UTIs should be treated immediately.

Like other medications, this antibiotic is available in brand-name and generic forms. Most of the time, generic medications contain the same amount of active ingredients and treat infections just as effectively as brand-name drugs.

Insurance coverage has the most significant impact on the price of this medication. Some providers and plans will cover the total cost of this antibiotic, but the patient will likely be responsible for a portion of the cost. Fortunately, doxycycline administered orally as a tablet is typically inexpensive. If you have insurance, expect to pay less than $30 for a standard prescription.

When to See a Doctor?

Your doctor may prescribe antibiotics if your urinary tract infection does not resolve independently. UTIs can be life-threatening if the infection extends to the kidneys. Consult a physician if you develop fever, trembling, nausea, or vomiting, as these symptoms may indicate a more severe infection.

If a urinary tract infection is left untreated, kidney injury may result. Also possible is sepsis, a life-threatening medical emergency. Untreated UTIs in expectant women can result in preterm birth. It can cause urethral constriction in men.

Final Words

UTIs are urinary tract infections that typically manifest in the bladder. Since bacteria cause most UTIs, antibiotics are a standard treatment. Doxycycline is an antibiotic that has proven effective in treating UTIs. It is typically used as a second-line treatment when other antibiotics have failed to treat an infection, and it is particularly effective in situations involving multiple pathogens.

As with all antibiotics, doxycycline has some adverse effects, the most common being stomach upset. However, there are also more severe adverse effects, and it is imperative to seek medical attention or consult a physician if any of these more severe symptoms occur.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Check out some commonly asked questions on Doxycycline and its effect on UTI treatment.

How long does it take doxycycline to work for UTI?

Doxycycline begins to function in as little as two hours after administration. However, depending on your infection type, it may take 24 to 48 hours (1 to 2 days) before you begin to feel its effects. Typically, doxycycline clears infection in 1 to 2 weeks, but some infections take 2 months.

What if UTI is not responding to doxycycline?

If you have a UTI that does not respond to antibiotic treatment, a urine culture to identify the bacteria causing the infection will likely be the first step in further testing. If a different variety of bacteria, fungi, or viruses is causing your UTI, your doctor will prescribe a more suitable treatment.

Does doxycycline stop painful urination?

More than two-thirds of patients with persistent frequency and urgency, chronic urethral and/or pelvic pain, dyspareunia, and a history of recurrent urinary tract infections respond favorably to treatment with doxycycline.

Can doxycycline and amoxicillin treat UTI?

Amoxicillin and doxycycline are antibiotics used to treat respiratory tract and other bacterial infections. Additionally, bacterial infections of the middle ear, tonsils, throat, urinary tract, and epidermis can be treated with amoxicillin. Additionally, it is used to treat gonorrhea.

How much doxycycline should I take for a UTI?

For urinary tract infection (UTI) treatment. On day one, 100 mg PO every 12 hours is administered, followed by 50 mg PO every 12 hours or 100 mg PO daily. Continue 100 mg PO every 12 hours for persistent and severe urinary tract infections.
