Google Pixel Watch 4 with Continuous SpO2 Tracking

Google is gearing up to unveil its next generation of devices at the upcoming Made by Google event on August 20, and one of the most anticipated reveals is the Pixel Watch 4.

While earlier leaks hinted that the new watch wouldn’t bring many hardware changes, a new report suggests that Google is adding significant health tracking upgrades—including continuous SpO2 monitoring, which could prove vital for users with respiratory concerns.

Pixel Watch 4 to Feature Continuous SpO2 Tracking

According to a report by Android Headlines, the Pixel Watch 4 is expected to introduce a new Breathing Emergencies Alert system. This feature uses the watch’s SpO2 sensor to continuously monitor blood oxygen levels. If the levels fall below a healthy threshold, the watch will alert the wearer—potentially warning them of early signs of breathing problems like hypoxemia, sleep apnea, or other respiratory issues.

Continuous SpO2 tracking would mark a major improvement over the current generation, which only checks oxygen levels intermittently or during sleep. This new feature builds on last year’s Loss of Pulse detection—a life-saving function introduced in Pixel Watch 3 that monitors heart rate and contacts emergency services if no pulse or severe irregularities are detected.

Google notes that such symptoms could indicate conditions like cardiac arrest, respiratory failure, circulatory issues, drug overdose, or poisoning.

Hardware and Design: Mostly Familiar, But More Repairable

In terms of hardware, don’t expect a major overhaul. The Pixel Watch 4 will likely keep the same Snapdragon W5 Gen 1 chipset, which Google also used in the Pixel Watch 2 and Pixel Watch 3. However, the new watch is expected to be available in two sizes:

  • 41mm variant with a 327mAh battery
  • 45mm variant with a 420mAh battery

Both sizes will reportedly come with Bluetooth and LTE connectivity options, giving users more flexibility.

One standout improvement could be repairability. Reports indicate that Google might finally allow authorized repairs for the Pixel Watch 4—addressing one of the biggest complaints from Pixel Watch users in past versions, where fixes often required full replacements or weren’t available at all.

What to Expect at the August 20 Launch Event

The Pixel Watch 4 will likely be launched alongside the Pixel 9 smartphone lineup and potentially other AI-focused devices. While the watch’s design might not change drastically, the added health monitoring capabilities, especially the real-time SpO2 tracking, could be a significant draw for health-conscious users.

As the launch date approaches, more leaks and official confirmations are expected. For now, the Pixel Watch 4 looks set to continue Google’s trend of focusing on health innovation while making its devices slightly more user-friendly and sustainable.
