Tom Cruise Vows to Make Movies Into His 100s After Reckoning

Tom Cruise Final Reckoning

Tom Cruise, Hollywood’s evergreen action star, made a high-energy appearance in New York City for the U.S. premiere of Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning on Sunday, May 18, 2025. The red carpet event at Lincoln Center came shortly after the film’s successful debut at the Cannes Film Festival, where it received a standing ovation lasting over five minutes, signaling the powerful impact of the latest—and possibly last—installment of the long-running Mission: Impossible franchise.

Cruise, now 62, looked enthusiastic and energized as he interacted with fans, photographers, and journalists, addressing what might be the conclusion of his portrayal of Ethan Hunt—a role that has defined his career over nearly three decades.

“It’s the final! It’s not called ‘Final Reckoning’ for nothing,” Cruise told media with a knowing smile.

An Ongoing Passion for Acting: “I Will Never Stop”

When asked if he had changed his earlier stance about continuing action films into his older years, Cruise offered an even bolder statement.

“I actually said I’m going to make movies into my 80s—actually, I’m going to make them into my 100s,” Cruise said with conviction. “I will never stop. I will never stop doing action. I will never stop doing drama, comedy films—I’m excited.”

This echoes Cruise’s previous comments from 2023, when he mentioned being inspired by Harrison Ford’s longevity in Hollywood. Ford, then 80, had just completed Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny. For Cruise, continuing to create thrilling cinematic experiences isn’t just a career—it’s a calling.

“Making movies is a joy for me. I love the storytelling, the collaboration, everything that goes into it,” Cruise shared. “There’s so much I’ve learned over the years—about life, leadership, filmmaking, culture—it’s been an exceptional journey. And I feel like I’m just getting started.”

Reflecting on 30 Years of Mission: Impossible

The Mission: Impossible film series began in 1996 with Brian De Palma directing the first entry. Since then, Cruise has reprised his role as IMF agent Ethan Hunt in eight films over nearly 30 years. Each installment has pushed the envelope for practical stunts, global storytelling, and action-packed spectacle.

Cruise emphasized that the rewards of making these films go far beyond box office numbers.

“There’s been so many levels of reward,” he explained. “From the filmmakers I’ve collaborated with, the incredible crews, the locations we’ve traveled to, and the audiences who have supported us—it’s all been beyond what I could’ve imagined.”

Extreme Stunts and Rituals: Staying Alive on Set

Cruise is widely known for performing his own stunts, a fact that has both thrilled fans and alarmed safety experts for years. From hanging off airplanes in Rogue Nation to scaling cliffs in Fallout, Cruise has continually defied expectations of what an actor can physically do.

When asked whether he has any superstitions or pre-stunt traditions, Cruise responded with a laugh.

“There’s a lot of pre-stunt rituals that keep me alive—it depends on what I’m doing,” he joked. “Each stunt requires a different level of preparation. A lot of thought and planning goes into it. These things are complex and very, very interesting.”

The actor’s dedication to training and safety has been instrumental in making each Mission: Impossible film more ambitious than the last. For The Final Reckoning, Cruise reportedly spent months preparing for multiple high-risk scenes across different international locations, including Norway, the UAE, and South Africa.

Meet the Star-Studded Cast of The Final Reckoning

While Cruise remains the anchor of the franchise, Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning boasts a powerful ensemble cast. Alongside Cruise, the film features:

  • Hayley Atwell as Grace
  • Simon Pegg as Benji Dunn
  • Ving Rhames as Luther Stickell
  • Pom Klementieff
  • Greg Tarzan Davis
  • Angela Bassett
  • Esai Morales
  • Henry Czerny (returning as Eugene Kittridge)
  • Charles Parnell
  • Holt McCallany
  • Nick Offerman
  • Tramell Tillman
  • Katy O’Brian

Christopher McQuarrie, a frequent Cruise collaborator, returns to the director’s chair for the fourth time in the franchise. McQuarrie praised Cruise for his boundless energy and commitment on set.

“He’s the most giving, most game person to work with,” McQuarrie said at the premiere. “Whether or not he understands something right away, he’s fully willing to jump in. He’s a great teacher and a great student at the same time.”

What Is The Final Reckoning About?

The plot picks up from 2023’s Dead Reckoning Part One, focusing on Hunt and his IMF team as they attempt to dismantle “The Entity”—a rogue, self-aware artificial intelligence that threatens global stability. As governments and tech moguls scramble to gain control of the digital weapon, Ethan must face his most dangerous mission yet—one that forces him to choose between the mission and those he loves.

“It’s a relevant story for today’s world,” said Cruise. “The idea of AI and who controls it is something we’re all thinking about.”

The film explores themes of loyalty, sacrifice, and the ethical consequences of technological advancement, layered with the signature tension, spy craft, and globe-trotting action the franchise is known for.

Early Reactions and Critical Buzz

Critics at Cannes and early U.S. screenings have praised the film’s breathtaking action and high production value. However, some reviewers noted that its nearly three-hour runtime and intricate plotlines may be challenging for casual viewers.

According to Entertainment Weekly, “The Final Reckoning reaches some of the franchise’s highest highs—but also flirts with narrative overload.” Meanwhile, The Guardian described it as “a satisfying, albeit slightly chaotic, swan song for Ethan Hunt.”

Despite mixed reviews about pacing, most agree that Cruise delivers yet another compelling and physically demanding performance that proves his star power remains unmatched.

Cruise’s Future: More Films on the Horizon

Though The Final Reckoning is being marketed as the final chapter of the Mission: Impossible saga, Cruise’s recent comments make it clear he’s not planning on retiring any time soon.

In fact, Top Gun 3 is already in early development stages at Paramount, with Cruise set to return as Maverick. He’s also been in talks for new original action-thriller franchises and continues to push for cinematic innovation—including a future film shot in outer space in partnership with NASA and Elon Musk’s SpaceX.

“The sky is not the limit,” Cruise joked. “I want to keep pushing boundaries—physically, creatively, emotionally—and see where stories can go.”
