Ephron’s Testimony: A Shocking Allegation
Taking the witness stand on Tuesday, Ephron provided a detailed account of the alleged shooting incident. He stated that an argument escalated between him and A$AP Rocky, whose real name is Rakim Mayers. During the confrontation, Mayers allegedly brandished a firearm and fired at him.
“[Rocky] turned around and then it was, like, BOOM!” Ephron recalled. He further claimed that he felt a bullet graze his hand, describing it as feeling “hot.” Seeking protection, he said he grabbed a friend and used him as cover before Mayers allegedly fired another shot and then fled the scene.
Prosecutors Present Video Evidence
Los Angeles County Deputy District Attorney Paul Przelomiec laid out the prosecution’s case, asserting that multiple surveillance videos captured the shooting incident. Alongside the footage, prosecutors presented a series of maps, identifying photographs, and a 911 call from the night of the alleged assault.
“This is not a complicated case. The evidence will show the events in this case were captured on surveillance video,” Przelomiec told the jury.
Defense Counters With Allegations of Financial Motive
A$AP Rocky’s legal team strongly denied the allegations, arguing that Ephron had ulterior motives. In the defense’s opening statements, Rocky’s lead attorney, Joe Tacopina, claimed that Ephron was seeking financial gain rather than justice.
“This is about one man’s lies, jealousy, and greed,” Tacopina told the jury. He further asserted that the firearm seen in the surveillance video was merely a prop gun, frequently used in movies and music videos. The defense also noted that multiple witnesses would testify to this claim.
Plea Deal Rejected, Potential Prison Sentence Looms
Mayers, a Grammy-nominated artist and partner to global pop icon Rihanna, was charged on August 15, 2022, with two counts of assault with a semi-automatic firearm. He pleaded not guilty. Prosecutors previously offered Mayers a plea deal involving a 180-day jail term, but he declined it, maintaining his innocence.
“He was offered a plea deal but is not interested because he is actually innocent,” Tacopina stated.
If convicted, A$AP Rocky could face up to 24 years in prison.
Civil and Defamation Lawsuits Add Complexity
Beyond the criminal trial, Ephron also filed a civil lawsuit against Mayers on August 10, 2022. The lawsuit accuses Mayers of assault, battery, emotional distress, and negligence, alleging that Ephron was struck by bullet fragments during the incident.
