Celebrate New Year 2025 Worldwide: Timings & Traditions

Follow Global New Year Celebrations

As the clock strikes midnight in New York City’s Times Square to welcome 2025, the world will already have been celebrating the new year for 26 hours across different time zones.

The global revelry showcases the diversity of traditions and timelines, starting from the first place to ring in the New Year and ending with the last.

Kiribati: The First to Celebrate

The honor of welcoming the new year first belongs to Kiritimati (Christmas Island) in Kiribati, a Pacific island nation. When it is 5 a.m. ET on December 31 in the United States, residents of Kiritimati kick off their celebrations at midnight local time. This small island nation sits on the edge of the International Date Line, giving it a head start in the festivities.

New Zealand and the Pacific Islands Follow

Just 15 minutes later, the Chatham Islands, a remote region of New Zealand, join the celebrations at 5:15 a.m. ET. By 6 a.m. ET, most of New Zealand, along with Tokelau, Samoa, Tonga, Kiribati’s Phoenix Islands, and parts of Antarctica, will welcome 2025. For these nations, New Year’s Eve is a vibrant affair, often featuring cultural performances, traditional food, and fireworks displays.

Australia’s Splendid Fireworks

Australia is one of the highlights of the global New Year celebrations. At 8 a.m. ET, iconic cities like Sydney and Melbourne light up the sky with their world-renowned fireworks over landmarks such as the Sydney Opera House and Harbour Bridge. Meanwhile, smaller regions like Adelaide celebrate half an hour later at 8:30 a.m. ET. By 9:30 a.m. ET, festivities extend to the Northern Territory, while Queensland celebrates an hour earlier at 9 a.m. ET.

Asia: A Blend of Tradition and Modernity

As the clock strikes 10 a.m. ET, Japan, South Korea, and North Korea usher in the new year with a mix of cultural traditions and modern celebrations. Temples in Japan resonate with the sound of bells being rung 108 times to cleanse people of worldly desires, while South Korea hosts large gatherings and vibrant fireworks displays. China, the Philippines, Malaysia, and several other Asian countries join the celebrations at 11 a.m. ET, marking the occasion with elaborate family meals and festivals.

India and Neighboring Regions Join In

By 1:30 p.m. ET, India and Sri Lanka welcome the new year. Known for its rich cultural diversity, India celebrates with a mix of modern parties and traditional gatherings. Streets light up with decorations, and fireworks fill the sky. Nepal joins earlier at 1:15 p.m. ET, while Bangladesh follows at 1 p.m. ET, marking the moment with cultural performances and joyous family reunions.

Europe: A Fusion of Cultures

By the evening of December 31, Europe is abuzz with celebration. At 6 p.m. ET, Germany, Italy, France, and several other countries in Central Europe mark the start of 2025. These nations are famous for their grand fireworks, public gatherings, and festive feasts. An hour later, at 7 p.m. ET, the United Kingdom and Portugal join in, with London’s iconic fireworks display over the Thames River being a global highlight.

The Americas: A Slow Roll into the New Year

As Europe winds down its festivities, the Americas begin to celebrate. The East Coast of the United States, including iconic locations like New York City, ushers in 2025 at midnight ET with the famous Times Square ball drop. Moving westward, Central and Mountain time zones follow at 1 a.m. ET and 2 a.m. ET, respectively. The West Coast, including Los Angeles and San Francisco, joins the party at 3 a.m. ET.

Hawaii and the Pacific: The Final Countdown

The last places to celebrate the arrival of 2025 include Hawaii, American Samoa, and the US Minor Outlying Islands. These regions bid farewell to 2024 between 5 a.m. and 7 a.m. ET on January 1. With serene beaches and vibrant traditions, these celebrations provide a unique and picturesque way to close the global New Year’s marathon.

A Day of Global Joy

With 39 different local time zones spanning the globe, the New Year’s celebration is truly a worldwide phenomenon. From the first toast in Kiribati to the final countdown in Baker Island, the transition into 2025 unites the world in joy and hope for the year ahead. Whether it’s the grand fireworks of Sydney or the intimate family gatherings in India, each region adds its unique charm to this global festivity.
