Liam Payne Death Case: 5 Charged in Connection with the Star’s Passing

liam payne death case

The untimely death of former One Direction singer Liam Payne has sparked a complex legal case in Argentina, where five individuals have been charged in connection with the events leading up to his fatal fall. Payne, who was staying at the CasaSur Palermo Hotel in Buenos Aires, died on October 16 after falling from a third-floor balcony. Prosecutors claim the individuals charged contributed to the circumstances surrounding his death, either through negligence, drug-related activities, or failing to ensure his safety.

The charges highlight troubling details about Payne’s final hours, his struggles with substance abuse, and allegations of mismanagement by those responsible for his care and surroundings.

Who Has Been Charged?

Hotel Employees

Two employees of the CasaSur Palermo Hotel, hotel manager Gilda Martin and receptionist Esteban Grassi, have been charged with manslaughter. The prosecution alleges that their failure to properly manage Payne’s safety created the conditions that led to his death.

According to prosecutors, instead of taking precautions to ensure Payne was safe, they allowed him to be taken to his hotel room in a vulnerable state without adequate supervision.

Friend and Travel Companion

Rogelio “Roger” Nores, Payne’s friend and travel companion, also faces manslaughter charges. Prosecutors argue that Nores abandoned Payne when he needed care, knowing full well that the singer was intoxicated and unable to take care of himself due to his history of substance abuse.

Drug Suppliers

Ezequiel Pereyra, a hotel employee, and Braian Paiz, a waiter from a nearby restaurant, face charges related to the supply of narcotics to Payne. Prosecutors allege that both men delivered cocaine to the singer on multiple occasions leading up to his death.

The charges against Pereyra and Paiz are more severe, carrying potential sentences of four to 15 years in prison.

Timeline of Events Leading to Payne’s Death

October 14: Initial Encounter

According to prosecutors, Payne met waiter Braian Paiz at a restaurant in the Puerto Madero neighborhood. Their initial meeting quickly escalated into a relationship centered on drug use.

It is alleged that Paiz delivered cocaine to Payne in the early hours of October 14, around 3:24 a.m. Paiz reportedly spent several hours in Payne’s hotel room before leaving to procure more drugs, which were delivered later that morning.

October 15-16: Increasing Vulnerability

On October 15, hotel employee Ezequiel Pereyra is accused of delivering cocaine to Payne at 3:25 a.m. The following day, Pereyra allegedly provided more drugs between 3:30 p.m. and 4:00 p.m. Prosecutors allege that Payne sent a car to Pereyra’s home to facilitate the transaction, further indicating his dependence on substances during this period.

Surveillance footage from the hotel lobby shows Payne in a highly intoxicated state on October 16. Witnesses claim that three individuals carried him to his room in the hours leading up to his death.

Autopsy Findings and Forensic Analysis

The autopsy revealed that Payne died from multiple trauma and internal bleeding caused by the fall. It also showed significant levels of cocaine and alcohol in his system. Forensic experts suggest that Payne, in his intoxicated state, attempted to leave his room via the balcony, possibly losing consciousness and falling to the restaurant patio below.

Judge Laura Bruniard, who is overseeing the case, noted that Payne did not appear to faint before the fall. She hypothesized that his attempt to climb from the balcony was a result of impaired judgment due to his intoxication.

Allegations Against the Accused

Rogelio “Roger” Nores

Prosecutors allege that Nores, as Payne’s companion, had a duty of care to ensure his safety but failed to act responsibly. Nores reportedly left the hotel approximately 40 minutes before Payne’s fatal fall, despite the singer’s visibly vulnerable state.

Judge Bruniard emphasized that Nores should have sought medical assistance for Payne rather than relying on hotel staff to manage the situation.

In his defense, Nores has denied the accusations, stating:

“I was a friend who loved him very much, who helped him selflessly in everything I could, who spent my own money to help him, and even then, it was not enough.”

He also highlighted the presence of over 15 people in the hotel lobby during his last interaction with Payne, asserting that he could not have predicted the tragedy.

Hotel Employees: Gilda Martin and Esteban Grassi

Martin and Grassi are accused of neglecting their responsibilities as hotel staff. Prosecutors argue that Grassi, in particular, led a group of individuals who carried Payne to his room rather than ensuring he was kept in a safe area where medical assistance could be provided.

Judge Bruniard criticized their actions, stating:

“The way he was being handled shows a state of vulnerability… bringing Payne up in that state to his room created a legally disapproved risk to his life.”

Drug Suppliers: Ezequiel Pereyra and Braian Paiz

Both Pereyra and Paiz face allegations of supplying cocaine to Payne, exacerbating his vulnerability. Pereyra is accused of multiple deliveries directly to the hotel, while Paiz reportedly maintained a closer relationship with the singer, spending extended periods in his hotel room and facilitating additional drug transactions.

Insights from the Investigation

Judge Bruniard has pieced together a detailed hypothesis based on surveillance footage, testimonies, and forensic evidence. Her findings suggest that Payne’s death was preventable had those around him acted with greater care.

Key conclusions from her ruling include:

  • Substance Abuse History: Payne had a long history of addiction, with recent hospitalizations, rehabilitation attempts, and two reported resuscitations within the past two years.
  • Vulnerability and Neglect: Payne was visibly unable to care for himself in his final hours, yet those responsible for his safety failed to take adequate measures.
  • Fatal Attempt to Escape: Forensic experts believe Payne’s fall occurred when he tried to leave his room via the balcony, a decision likely influenced by his impaired state.

Defendants Speak Out

Nores Defends His Actions

Nores has expressed frustration at being blamed for Payne’s death, citing his close friendship and efforts to help the singer overcome his struggles. In a written statement, he said:

“I do not consider that I deserve the accusation that is being leveled at me.”

Paiz Denies Drug Dealing

In an interview with TMZ, Paiz acknowledged partying with Payne but firmly denied selling drugs to him:

“They say I’m the dealer, that I carried drugs, that I sold them. The truth is no, I didn’t sell them.”

Ongoing Legal Proceedings

As the investigation continues, the five accused individuals face potentially lengthy prison sentences if convicted. The case sheds light on the dangers of substance abuse, the responsibilities of caregivers and professionals, and the consequences of negligence in high-stakes situations.

The death of Liam Payne has left a void in the music world, serving as a tragic reminder of the importance of addressing addiction and ensuring the safety of vulnerable individuals. Authorities in Argentina are determined to uncover the full truth and hold those responsible accountable.
