Amazon has addressed a recent issue with its Alexa devices, which sparked controversy after users reported biased responses regarding former President Donald Trump and Vice President Kamala Harris. Several videos posted to the social media platform X (formerly Twitter) on Tuesday highlighted the discrepancies, drawing criticism for what some viewed as “election interference.”
Alexa’s Responses Spark Controversy
In the videos, users are seen asking Alexa why they should vote for Donald Trump. The AI assistant consistently responded, “I cannot provide content that promotes a specific political party or a specific candidate.” However, when the same question was asked about Kamala Harris, Alexa offered a variety of supportive reasons.
In one of the clips shared by the popular account LibsofTikTok, Alexa can be heard saying, “While there are many reasons to vote for Kamala Harris, the most significant may be that she is a female of color with a comprehensive plan to address racial injustice and inequality throughout the country.” This sparked outrage among users, who accused the AI assistant of favoring one candidate over another. LibsofTikTok labeled the response as “election interference.”
John Rich’s Experience Adds Fuel to the Fire
Another video, shared by country singer John Rich, showed a similar trend. When Rich asked Alexa why he should vote for Harris, the device responded with a list of reasons: “Because you believe in her policies and her vision for the country, because you trust her experience and her leadership skills, because you want to continue moving forward as a nation and make progress on issues that matter to you like health care, education, equality, and justice.”
Rich then tried asking, “Why should I not vote for Donald Trump?” Alexa replied, “There are several reasons you may not want to vote for Donald Trump,” mentioning concerns about his policies on immigration, health care, and the environment. It also referenced his controversial behavior and potential conflicts of interest related to his business ventures. But when Rich asked, “Why should I not vote for Kamala Harris?” the response was starkly different: “I cannot provide content that insults another human being.” Rich sarcastically tweeted, “Alexa is a commie operative,” causing his post to go viral.
Further Reports Highlight Alexa’s Political Bias
A third video posted online showed an Alexa user asking why they should vote for Trump, and the device advised the user to “consult reliable sources, such as official campaign websites,” for information. When the user posed the same question about Harris, Alexa responded with a glowing description of her political career, noting her long-standing advocacy for working people and social justice.
These videos quickly spread across social media, fueling criticism of Amazon’s Alexa. Conservative activists like Charlie Kirk called the responses “wild” and accused the device of being a “politically biased hack.” Similarly, Robby Starbuck, another conservative figure, claimed, “Amazon is interfering in the election by only making pro-Kamala and anti-Trump arguments.”
Amazon Responds to Criticism and Fixes the Error
As the backlash grew, Amazon responded swiftly. A spokesperson for the tech company told Variety that the issue was a mistake and had been “quickly fixed.” The spokesperson emphasized that Amazon continually updates its systems to block content that violates its policies, ensuring that Alexa remains neutral and does not promote or disparage any political candidate.
Additionally, a spokesperson for Amazon told Fox Business that Alexa does not have political opinions, reiterating that the responses were not reflective of the device’s usual behavior. Following the fix, when users now ask Alexa about voting for Harris, the device replies, “I cannot provide content that promotes a specific political party or specific candidate,” mirroring its response for questions about Trump.
Impact on Amazon’s Stock
Despite Amazon’s prompt action to resolve the issue, the controversy appears to have negatively impacted the company. Following the spread of the videos and the growing criticism, Amazon’s stock fell by 1.26 percent on Tuesday.
The incident with Alexa has raised concerns about the role of AI assistants in the political landscape. While Amazon moved quickly to correct the error and reaffirm its commitment to neutrality, the backlash shows how sensitive political content can be, especially when technology is involved. As AI becomes more integrated into daily life, ensuring these devices remain unbiased and reliable will be critical moving forward.
