Marvel’s Fantastic Four: First Steps Revealed at San Diego Comic-Con

Marvel’s First Family, the Fantastic Four, made a significant impact at San Diego Comic-Con on Saturday evening. Fans gathered in Hall H were treated to an exclusive look at the concept reel for the first “Fantastic Four” movie in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). Director Matt Shakman introduced the reel, setting the stage for what promises to be an exciting addition to the MCU. The film, titled “The Fantastic 4: First Steps,” aims to capture the essence of the beloved superhero team with a fresh, retro-futuristic approach.

A Retro-Future ’60s Aesthetic

“We’re doing a retro-future ’60s. Syd Mead was an inspiration. The ’60s, to me, is all about optimism,” Shakman explained to the enthusiastic audience. This statement set the tone for the film’s unique aesthetic, which draws heavily from the 1960s’ vision of the future. Syd Mead, known for his futuristic designs in movies like “Blade Runner,” has significantly influenced the film’s look and feel. Shakman elaborated, “I love the Fantastic Four. I love their power set. We want to be true to the comics but we want to be true to life.” This approach promises to blend the classic comic book feel with a touch of realistic grounding.

A Sneak Peek of the Superhero Film

Shakman then stepped aside to unveil a video that offered fans a taste of the upcoming superhero film. The footage, designed to resemble a news reel from the ’60s, provided several intriguing glimpses into the movie. One scene featured Mr. Fantastic, portrayed by Pedro Pascal, speaking to a seemingly uninterested classroom under a banner that read “Fantastic Science.” This scene humorously captured the dichotomy between Reed Richards’ genius and the mundane reality of teaching.

Other highlights from the reel included the superhero team’s iconic flying vehicle, the Fantasticar, which soared through the skies in its retro-futuristic glory. Fans were also shown the team donning space suits for an adventure beyond Earth, highlighting the film’s ambitious scope. The reel continued with a dramatic rocket launch sequence, emphasizing the film’s high-stakes action. A particularly amusing moment featured the Thing, played by Ebon Moss-Bachrach, as a mystery contestant on a dating show, adding a touch of humor to the intense narrative. The sequence culminated with a menacing shot of Galactus, the film’s primary antagonist, hinting at the epic battles to come.

Michael Giacchino to Score “First Steps”

In addition to the concept reel, it was announced that Michael Giacchino, renowned for his work on “Up” and “Lost,” will compose the score for “First Steps.” Giacchino’s involvement promises to bring an emotional and epic musical backdrop to the film. His previous work has been celebrated for its ability to enhance storytelling through music, making him an exciting addition to the project. The panelists shared that they would be flying back to the U.K. on Monday, with production set to begin shortly afterward. This timeline indicates that fans can look forward to a swift progression from announcement to the realization of the film.

Meet the Star-Studded Cast

The panel also introduced the film’s star-studded cast, who joined the stage during Marvel’s San Diego Comic-Con panel in Hall H. Pedro Pascal will take on the role of Reed Richards, also known as Mister Fantastic. Vanessa Kirby will portray Susan Storm, the Invisible Woman. Joseph Quinn has been cast as Johnny Storm, the Human Torch, and Ebon Moss-Bachrach will play Ben Grimm, the Thing. This talented ensemble is expected to bring depth and charisma to these iconic characters.

When asked about joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Pascal shared a heartwarming anecdote, “New family. Nobody knows that Matt and I have known each other for 25 years. We had the same manager, and he almost became my roommate in 1999 until he saw the place and he said, ‘nevermind.’” This revelation added a personal touch to the panel, highlighting the long-standing connections within the cast and crew.

The cast also includes Julia Garner as the enigmatic Silver Surfer and Ralph Ineson as the formidable Galactus. Additionally, Paul Walter Hauser, Natasha Lyonne, and John Malkovich will appear in undisclosed roles, adding further intrigue to the film’s already impressive lineup.

The Rocky History of “Fantastic Four” Films

The “Fantastic Four” franchise has had a tumultuous journey in bringing its heroes to the big screen. The first attempt in 1994 was abruptly scrapped after a press tour. It was later revealed that the film was made solely to retain movie rights to the characters, and according to Stan Lee, it “was never supposed to be shown to anybody.” This ill-fated project set the tone for future adaptations.

In the 2000s, Fox released two “Fantastic Four” movies starring Ioan Gruffudd, Jessica Alba, Chris Evans, and Michael Chiklis. While these films were commercially successful, they received mixed to negative reviews from critics, who felt that they failed to capture the essence of the characters and their stories. These films, however, introduced many viewers to the Fantastic Four, solidifying the team’s place in pop culture despite the critical reception.

The franchise attempted a reboot in 2015 with a new cast featuring Miles Teller, Kate Mara, Michael B. Jordan, and Jamie Bell. Unfortunately, this reboot was widely panned by critics and fans alike, with many citing its lack of coherence and failure to do justice to the source material. The film’s disappointing performance left the future of the “Fantastic Four” in limbo until Marvel Studios reacquired the rights.

With “The Fantastic 4: First Steps” set to release on July 25, 2025, fans are eagerly anticipating this new installment. The film promises to bring a fresh and authentic take on Marvel’s First Family, combining a nostalgic ’60s aesthetic with the high-quality production values that the MCU is known for. This new approach aims to finally do justice to the beloved characters and provide an exciting and engaging experience for both longtime fans and newcomers.

The unveiling at San Diego Comic-Con has set high expectations, and the involvement of talented individuals both in front of and behind the camera suggests that “The Fantastic 4: First Steps” will be a significant milestone in the ongoing expansion of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
