Jayson Tatum Signs NBA’s Biggest Contract Ever: $314 Million with Celtics

Jayson Tatum

Boston Celtics star Jayson Tatum has agreed to a record-breaking five-year, $314 million contract extension, making it the largest deal in NBA history. The agreement includes a player option and a trade kicker, sources told ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski on Monday.

Setting New Records

Tatum’s new contract surpasses previous records, reflecting his value and contribution to the Celtics. At 26, Tatum has already solidified his place as one of the NBA’s elite players.

His performance in the recent season, where he led the Celtics to their 18th NBA title with a victory over the Dallas Mavericks, was instrumental in securing this massive deal.

“We spoke for about 20 to 30 minutes,” Mescal said about his first meeting with Scott. “I wanted to get a flavor from him about what the story was going to be about, so we spent about 15 minutes talking about that, and then we spent another 10 minutes talking about the sport that I played growing up — Gaelic football. Maybe that helped with it, in that I’m used to being physical in my body. I remember that probably two or three weeks later, the offer came in.”

The Financial Impact

The deal’s total and average annual value now make Tatum the highest-paid player in NBA history, surpassing his teammate Jaylen Brown’s $285 million contract signed last year.

This extension ensures that the Celtics remain competitive for the foreseeable future, as their core players are locked in with substantial financial commitments.

“I just wanted to be big and strong and look like somebody who can cause a bit of damage when shit hits the fan,” Mescal explained. “I think also, sometimes, one could, in striving for that perfect look, end up looking more like an underwear model than a warrior.”

Celtics’ Dominance

The Celtics’ strategic financial decisions have placed them in a strong position. With Tatum and Brown secured and Derrick White’s new four-year, $126 million extension, the team has every member of its starting lineup under contract through at least the 2025-26 season. This stability is crucial for their continued success in the league.

“Muscles start to grow, which can be deemed aesthetic in certain capacities, but something about feeling strong in your body elicits just a different feeling. You carry yourself differently,” he added. “It impacts you psychologically in a useful way for the film.”

Tatum’s Career Achievements

Since being drafted third overall by the Celtics in 2017, Tatum has consistently improved and established himself as a top player in the NBA. A five-time All-Star and four-time All-NBA selection, Tatum’s achievements include winning a gold medal at the Tokyo Olympics in 2021.

He is expected to play a vital role in Team USA’s campaign at the Paris Olympics this summer.

Pedro Pascal added, “He got so strong. I would rather be thrown from a building than have to fight him again. To go up against somebody fit, talented, and much younger… It’s brutal, man.”

Financial Future and Implications

The Celtics are now facing significant financial implications with their roster. In the 2025-26 season, the combined contracts of Jayson Tatum, Brown, White, Jrue Holiday, and Kristaps Porzingis will total $198.5 million.

Combined with a substantial luxury tax bill, this makes the Celtics one of the highest-spending teams in NBA history. However, the upcoming TV deal and increasing salary cap are expected to provide some financial relief.

Market Value and Franchise Ownership

The Celtics’ ownership situation is also in flux, as the majority owner announced plans to sell the team. The franchise, valued at $5.12 billion, is expected to fetch a record price, surpassing the $4 billion paid for the Phoenix Suns. The new owners will inherit a highly talented and expensive roster, but the team’s current success and future potential make it a lucrative investment.

Tatum’s co-star Pedro Pascal called him “Brick Wall Paul” because of his physique. “He got so strong,” Pascal admitted. “I would rather be thrown from a building than have to fight him again. To go up against somebody that fit, talented, and much younger… It’s brutal, man.”

A Bright Future Ahead

With Tatum’s historic contract extension, the Celtics have secured their future and remained dominant in the NBA. Tatum’s leadership, combined with the talent surrounding him, promises to keep Boston in contention for championships in the years to come. As the league continues to evolve, the Celtics’ strategic moves position them well for sustained success and financial stability.

Paramount Pictures is set to release “Gladiator II” in theaters nationwide on November 22. As anticipation builds, fans and critics alike are eager to see how Mescal’s dedication and physical transformation translate on the big screen. The sequel promises to deliver an epic narrative and a testament to Mescal’s commitment to his craft.
