Rick and Morty fans around the world are eagerly asking, “When is season 8 of Rick and Morty coming out?”
The beloved animated series has consistently delivered mind-bending adventures, sharp humor, and unforgettable moments. As anticipation builds, here’s everything we know so far about the upcoming season.
When is Season 8 of Rick and Morty Coming Out?
The release of Rick and Morty Season 8 has sparked curiosity among fans, with speculation about plot twists and interdimensional escapades. While an official release date has yet to be confirmed, production is reportedly on track, promising another season filled with creative storytelling and bold experiments in animation.
The Long Wait for Season 8
The journey to Rick and Morty Season 8 has been a rollercoaster ride for fans. Following the conclusion of Season 7 in December 2023, viewers were left wondering about the future of the show. The series had maintained a yearly release schedule since 2018, but various factors, including the 2023 Hollywood writers’ strike and behind-the-scenes changes, have pushed the next season’s premiere to 2025.
This delay breaks the show’s six-year streak of annual releases, marking the longest gap between seasons since the early days of the series. However, the extra time devoted to Season 8 makes sense considering the significant changes that have occurred behind the scenes, including the introduction of new lead voice actors.
What We Know About Rick and Morty Season 8?
Release Date and Production Status
While the exact premiere date remains under wraps, Adult Swim has confirmed that Rick and Morty Season 8 will debut in 2025. The show’s production team is already hard at work on the upcoming season. Sarah Chalke, who voices Beth, revealed in December 2023 that Season 8 has already been written, though the voice actors were yet to receive their scripts at that time.
Cast Changes and Continuity
One of the most significant changes in recent seasons has been the recasting of the titular characters. Following the departure of co-creator Justin Roiland, Ian Cardoni and Harry Belden have taken over as the voices of Rick and Morty, respectively. Fans can expect them to reprise their roles in Season 8, along with the return of other familiar voices like Chris Parnell as Jerry, Sarah Chalke as Beth, and Spencer Grammer as Summer.
Plot Hints and Expectations
While specific plot details are being kept under wraps, showrunner Scott Marder has hinted at what fans can expect from Season 8. In an interview with Variety, Marder mentioned that the upcoming season will aim for “a cool balance of silly and one-up canonical stuff.” He also confirmed that Evil Morty will make a return, stating, “We can expect to see him in the future. We certainly have plans and grand designs with him, for sure”.
The Season 7 finale set up some intriguing possibilities for Season 8, including:
- Morty’s potential for more independence and solo adventures
- Rick grappling with the aftermath of defeating Rick Prime
- Exploration of family dynamics and character growth
- Possible return of fan-favorite characters and new interdimensional escapades
In December 2024, Adult Swim released a teaser trailer for Rick and Morty Season 8, giving fans their first glimpse of what’s to come. The brief clip, titled “Important House Business,” showcases a typical Rick scheme gone awry:
- Rick is seen auditioning various aliens and humans to replace Jerry
- The family unexpectedly walks in on Rick’s plan
- The teaser ends with a festive touch, featuring Christmas lights and a reminder of the 2025 premiere.
This sneak peek suggests that the show is returning to its lighthearted roots while still maintaining the complex family dynamics that fans have come to love.
The Future of Rick and Morty
Long-Term Plans
Rick and Morty’s future extends well beyond Season 8. In 2018, the show received a massive 70-episode renewal order, ensuring its continuation through Season 10. This commitment from Adult Swim means fans can look forward to at least three more seasons of interdimensional mayhem.
Viewership and Popularity
Despite the changes and delays, Rick and Morty continues to be a ratings powerhouse. Warner Bros. Discovery reported that Season 7 performed 25% better on streaming platforms compared to Season 6, defying predictions of viewership decline. The show’s enduring popularity is evident in its impressive statistics:
