International Women’s Day 2024: What You Need to Know, from Theme to History, Significance and More

IWD 2024 Theme History Significance

International Women’s Day (IWD) is celebrated every year on March 8 to recognize the social, economic, cultural, and political accomplishments of women worldwide. This day also serves as a reminder to take action towards advancing gender equality.

It not only celebrates the achievements and progress women have made, but also emphasizes the ongoing struggles for equality and the need for continued advocacy and action worldwide.

Today, various events are held worldwide to showcase the combined efforts of individuals advocating for equal rights in the continuous fight for gender equality. Gloria Steinem once said, “The narrative of women’s fight for equal rights doesn’t belong to just one feminist or organization, but to everyone who values human rights.”

Here is a comprehensive guide to International Women’s Day 2024.

International Women’s Day: Theme 2024

In 2024, the United Nations has chosen the theme ‘Invest in Women: Accelerate Progress’ to address economic disempowerment, while the campaign theme for this year is ‘Inspire Inclusion.’

This emphasizes the importance of diversity and empowerment in all areas of society. This campaign highlights the significance of diversity and empowerment in different aspects of society, emphasizing the crucial role of inclusion in promoting gender equality.

International Women’s Day: The Origin

International Women’s Day originated in the early 20th century, stemming from the labor movements in North America and Europe. In the United States, the inaugural National Women’s Day took place on February 28, 1909. The event was arranged by the Socialist Party of America to honor the 1908 garment workers’ strike in New York, during which women demonstrated against poor working conditions.

In 1910, Clara Zetkin introduced International Women’s Day at the International Women’s Conference in Copenhagen. The concept received unanimous approval, resulting in the inaugural observance in 1911 across various European nations, with more than a million individuals supporting women’s rights.

Throughout the years, International Women’s Day has evolved into a worldwide day of acknowledgment and festivity. In 1975, the United Nations initiated the celebration of the day, and in 1977, the UN General Assembly encouraged member states to designate March 8 as the UN Day for Women’s Rights and World Peace.

International Women’s Day: Significance

International Women’s Day is important because it highlights issues like gender equality, reproductive rights, and violence and abuse against women. This platform allows for collective action and collaboration to advocate for women’s rights and empowerment. Overall, today serves as a stark reminder that achieving gender equality is still a distant goal, as the World Economic Forum predicts it will take more than a century to reach.

International Women’s Day serves as a reminder to celebrate women’s accomplishments and to work towards gender equality by promoting reflection, advocacy, and action to eliminate barriers for women and girls worldwide.
