Foreign travelers planning to visit India can do so starting Monday (November 15), as the country reopened its borders to mass foreign tourism, lifting a 20-month ban as coronavirus infections remain low across the country.
Tourists on chartered flights have been given admission since last month, and Indian authorities have now extended this to commercial airplane arrivals as well.
After suspending tourist visas in March of last year, India is now allowing properly vaccinated tourists from 99 reciprocal nations to enter without quarantine. The government merely requires such visitors to be monitored for 14 days after their arrival.
In light of the current Covid-19 crisis in India and, by extension, the rest of the world, India stopped all visas granted to foreign travelers last year. Not only that, but the country has put a variety of other restrictions on international travel, such as limiting the number of flights and forming special ‘air bubble’ agreements with nations that had favorable travel conditions.
With the pandemic situation gradually improving, overseas visitors were eventually permitted to apply for any type of Indian visa other than a tourist visa to simplify their entry and stay in India.
The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare said that India’s total COVID-19 immunization coverage reached 112.34 crore on Monday, with 30,20,119 vaccine doses administered in the previous 24 hours.
Provisional reports show that 1,12,34,30,478 dosages were provided through 1,15,01,243 sessions as of 7 a.m. Monday.
In the meantime, there have been 10,229 additional cases reported in the last 24 hours. The current active caseload of 1,34,096 is the lowest in 523 days. Active cases account for 0.39 percent of all positive cases in the country, the lowest level since March 2020.
