Barcelona Debates Future of Xavi Hernández Amidst Financial Struggles

future of xavi hernandez at barcelona

The future of Xavi Hernández as Barcelona’s head coach is once again under intense scrutiny.

Less than a month after both club president Joan Laporta and Xavi publicly confirmed that the former player would continue for at least another season, sources have told ESPN that there are renewed doubts about his tenure.

Officially, Barcelona maintains that nothing has changed regarding Xavi’s position, but internal sources suggest that his dismissal remains a possibility.

Laporta’s Trust Issues and Internal Pressures

Reports indicate that Joan Laporta has never fully trusted Xavi. Despite the official stance, there is an ongoing internal dispute at the club about whether Xavi should remain as head coach.

While some members of the board support his continuation, Laporta faces mounting pressure from both within and outside the club to part ways with Xavi.

Xavi’s Camp Calls for Calm Amidst Tension

Xavi’s team has tried to downplay the tension, urging for calm. However, they have not received any official communication from the board regarding his potential departure.

Speculation about his future began even before Barcelona’s 2-0 win over Almeria, adding to the uncertainty.

Laporta’s Emotional Leadership Style

Those close to both Laporta and Xavi are not surprised by the latest turn of events, citing Laporta’s emotional approach to leading the club.

The trigger for Laporta’s renewed doubts reportedly came during a press conference before the Almeria game, where Xavi highlighted the financial difficulties hindering Barcelona’s ability to compete for trophies.

Financial Concerns and On-Field Performance

Xavi’s comments about the club’s financial struggles reportedly upset Laporta, who subsequently did not travel with the team to Almeria.

Barcelona secured a 2-0 victory, moving four points clear of third-placed Girona.

Despite the win, the relationship between Laporta and Xavi remains strained, with several internal and external influences pushing for a coaching change. If you want you can also read- Barcelona Revokes Dani Alves’ Legendary Status.

Xavi’s U-Turn on Resignation

Earlier this year, Xavi announced his intention to step down at the end of the season following a 5-3 defeat to Villarreal.

However, he reversed that decision after a meeting with Laporta, despite Barcelona’s Champions League exit and a defeat to Real Madrid in La Liga, which left the team on the verge of a trophy-less campaign.

Contradictory Discourses and Uneasy Truce

During the meeting, Xavi displayed optimism about the future, but his recent statements to the media have painted a different picture.

He emphasized the club’s financial constraints and the challenges they pose. “We are going to try to compete,” Xavi said. “The situation is difficult financially.

It has nothing to do with what used to happen 25 years ago when the coach came and said, ‘I like this player, this one and this one.’ It doesn’t work like that anymore. The supporters need to understand the situation.”

Planning for the Future

Despite the speculation, Xavi remains focused on planning for the next season. “Nothing has been said to me personally [by the club],” Xavi told reporters after the Almeria win.

“The relationship has not changed. I just said what I think, what’s real, that we are going to fight for everything, but the situation is not easy, and we are all working together to turn the situation around.”

 Xavi’s Impact as Coach

Xavi, who made over 700 appearances for Barcelona as a player, took over as head coach in 2021, replacing Ronald Koeman.

He led the team to a second-place finish in his first term and won La Liga and the Supercopa last season.

However, Barcelona has struggled to build on that success this season, and they will end the campaign without a trophy despite progressing to the Champions League quarterfinals for the first time since 2020.

Barcelona’s Upcoming Match Against Real Sociedad

As the season draws to a close, Barcelona faces Real Sociedad at the Estadi Olimpic Lluis Companys in their penultimate home game.

A win could see them move back into second place above Girona. Xavi will be without key players such as Gavi, Alejandro Balde, and Frenkie de Jong, while Andreas Christensen is expected to start despite nursing an injury.

The match will be a crucial test for Xavi and his team as they aim to finish the season on a high note.

The future of Xavi Hernández at Barcelona remains uncertain as internal debates and financial challenges continue to cloud his tenure.

While he has shown commitment to the club and its future, the mounting pressures and mixed performances have left his position in jeopardy.

As Barcelona prepares for their final matches of the season, the outcome could significantly influence the decisions made regarding Xavi’s role as head coach.
