Disney has postponed the release of numerous films in 2022 and 2023, including Black Panther 2 and Thor: Love and Thunder.
Multiple Marvel movies have been pushed back by months, while several untitled projects have been removed entirely from the schedule, according to a press release issued Monday morning.
The following are the major updates:
1. Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness will be released on May 6, 2022 (previously dated March 25, 2022)
2. Thor: Love and Thunder will be released on July 8, 2022 (previously dated on May 6, 2022).
3. Black Panther: Wakanda Forever will be released on November 11, 2022 (previously dated on July 8, 2022).
4. The Marvels will premiere on February 17, 2023 (previously dated on Nov. 11, 2022).
5. Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania will be released on July 28, 2023 (previously dated Feb. 27, 2023).
An untitled Indiana Jones film set for release in July 2022 has been pushed back to June 2023, while an untitled Marvel film set for release in November 2023 has been moved up by one week. Avatar 2 will be released by the end of 2022, and three additional sequels will be released before 2028.
Disney did not provide an explanation for the delays, although they could be tied to new mask and vaccine requirements in U.S. theaters, as well as big-budget blockbusters not performing as well as expected during the pandemic. Despite the success of Marvel’s Black Widow and Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, even a mediocre opening weekend may cost the studio hundreds of millions of dollars. Large productions also increase the danger of cast and crew members developing COVID-19, which costs the studio money in production delays as people are securely quarantined or treated.
