Blake Lively Alleges Co-Star Justin Baldoni Ran a Smear Campaign

blake lively alleges smear campaign by justin baldoni

Blake Lively, the 37-year-old actress known for her roles in Gossip Girl and A Simple Favor, has filed a legal complaint against her It Ends With Us co-star and director Justin Baldoni. The filing includes allegations of sexual harassment and an orchestrated campaign to harm her public image. This legal filing, submitted to the California Civil Rights Department, outlines a series of troubling behaviors that allegedly created a hostile work environment during the production of the romantic drama. It also marks the latest development in a high-profile Hollywood dispute, raising questions about workplace ethics and accountability in the entertainment industry.

The Allegations: Misconduct and Hostile Work Environment

The allegations against Justin Baldoni, 40, and Wayfarer Studios CEO Jamey Heath, detailed in the filing, are both personal and professional. According to the complaint, Lively experienced repeated instances of inappropriate and unwelcome behavior during the film’s production. Among the specific allegations:

  • Baldoni and Heath allegedly discussed their personal pornography addictions with Lively and other crew members.
  • Baldoni reportedly made explicit references to his genitalia during conversations on set.
  • The director allegedly suggested or attempted to add explicit sex scenes, including oral sex and on-camera climaxes, that were not part of the original script Lively had approved when she joined the project.
  • Baldoni is accused of making inappropriate remarks about being able to communicate with Lively’s deceased father.

The complaint further describes how these behaviors extended beyond verbal misconduct, alleging instances of physical intimidation and unwelcome advances. Lively claims the environment created by Baldoni and Heath made it increasingly difficult to perform her duties on set.

Ryan Reynolds Joins the Discussion

Lively’s legal filing reveals that her husband, actor Ryan Reynolds, attended a pivotal meeting on January 4, 2024, aimed at addressing her concerns. Reynolds, 47, is a Hollywood heavyweight himself, known for his roles in the Deadpool franchise and Free Guy. His presence at the meeting underscored the seriousness of the allegations.

During the meeting, Lively presented a list of 30 specific demands aimed at improving the work environment. These included:

  • A commitment from Baldoni and Heath to refrain from making personal or inappropriate comments.
  • A request for no further discussions about pornography addiction or sexually explicit topics on set.
  • Assurance that no additional explicit scenes be added to the script without her consent.

Despite these attempts to address her concerns, Lively alleges that the response from Baldoni and Heath was retaliatory. According to her complaint, they devised a “multi-tiered plan” to tarnish her reputation.

Accusations of Retaliation and Smear Campaign

The legal filing accuses Baldoni and Wayfarer Studios of launching a coordinated effort to discredit Lively publicly. This alleged campaign involved leaking negative stories to the press, promoting false narratives about her professionalism, and using social media to amplify rumors of conflict on set.

The complaint describes how the campaign allegedly included:

  • Claims that Lively had made unreasonable demands.
  • Suggestions that she threatened to derail the film by refusing to appear on set or promote the movie.
  • Efforts to isolate her from other cast members and production staff.

Evidence provided in the filing includes emails and text messages allegedly outlining these tactics. One message reportedly referenced strategies used in other high-profile Hollywood disputes to manipulate public opinion and undermine accusers.

Baldoni’s Defense and Counterclaims

Justin Baldoni, known for his previous work on Jane the Virgin and his role as co-founder of Wayfarer Studios, has strongly denied all allegations. Through his attorney Bryan Freedman, Baldoni released a statement describing Lively’s claims as “categorically false” and part of an attempt to harm his career.

Freedman stated that Lively’s allegations are “intentionally salacious” and intended to “rehash a false narrative” in the media. He also accused Lively of making threats to sabotage the film, including refusing to show up on set and declining to participate in promotional activities, unless her demands were met.

Baldoni’s legal team has indicated that they plan to counter the claims aggressively, arguing that Lively’s actions were part of an effort to protect her own reputation rather than address genuine workplace grievances.

Co-Star Conflicts and Industry Fallout

The allegations have sparked widespread speculation about tensions on the set of It Ends With Us. The romantic drama, based on Colleen Hoover’s best-selling novel, tells the story of Lily Bloom, a florist navigating an abusive relationship. Baldoni not only starred in the film but also served as its director and a co-producer through Wayfarer Studios.

Rumors of discord first surfaced during the film’s promotional campaign. Lively and Baldoni notably did not appear together at major red-carpet events, fueling speculation of a rift. Further controversy arose when co-star Brandon Sklenar hinted at behind-the-scenes conflicts in an Instagram post shortly after the film’s release.

Public and Industry Reactions

The allegations have prompted reactions from within and outside the entertainment industry. Colleen Hoover, the author of It Ends With Us, publicly supported Lively, stating that she admired her courage in speaking out. Meanwhile, Lively’s former co-stars from The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants—America Ferrera, Amber Tamblyn, and Alexis Bledel—released a joint statement commending her bravery.

However, Baldoni has faced professional consequences as well. His talent agency, WME, has reportedly dropped him as a client. This move reflects the growing impact of the allegations on his career, even as he continues to deny wrongdoing.

Box Office Success Amid Controversy

Despite the controversy, It Ends With Us has been a commercial success. The film grossed over $350 million globally, drawing audiences with its emotionally charged storyline and star-studded cast. However, some critics have questioned whether the film romanticized domestic violence, sparking debates about its portrayal of sensitive topics.

Blake Lively’s Statement

In a statement provided through her attorneys, Lively expressed hope that her legal action would shine a light on the “sinister tactics” used to silence individuals who speak out against misconduct. She emphasized that her goal is to create a safer and more respectful work environment for everyone in the industry.

The case is still in its early stages, with Lively’s complaint representing one step before a formal lawsuit. Both sides appear poised for a legal battle that could have significant implications for their careers and for Hollywood’s ongoing reckoning with workplace misconduct.

As the story develops, it serves as a stark reminder of the challenges faced by individuals who come forward with allegations of abuse and the broader cultural shift toward greater accountability in the entertainment industry.
