Anthony Edwards’ Tragedy: Mom’s Death Fuels NBA Rise

Anthony Edwards NBA Rise Moms Death

Minnesota Timberwolves star Anthony Edwards has had the unwavering support of his family, driving him throughout his career. Anthony’s journey has been characterized by both personal loss and triumph since his birth on August 5, 2001, to Chrisha Yvette Edwards and an unnamed father.

Early Life and Family Tragedy

Chrisha Yvette Edwards and Shirley, his grandmother, were primarily responsible for raising Anthony Edwards, also known as “Ant-Man.”

Tragically, both women passed away when Anthony was just 14 years old, leaving him in the care of his older brother and sister.

This loss profoundly affected him, as he admitted to ESPN in a 2020 profile, saying, “There are only two people who are going to get my all, but that’s over with. Nobody’s going to get it.”

Despite the heartache, Anthony’s determination to make his late mother and grandmother proud became his driving force.

His brother, Bubba, told ESPN that Yvette and Shirley attended all of Anthony’s games from childhood, and their deaths left a lasting impact on him.

The Nickname “Ant-Man”

Anthony’s nickname, “Ant-Man,” was given to him by his father when he was a toddler.

However, Anthony admits that he knows little about his father other than hearing from people around town that he was a skilled basketball player himself.

With his father largely absent, Shirley stepped in to help raise Anthony and his siblings, often hosting weekly dinners for the family.

Early Aspirations and Support

One of the defining moments of Anthony’s childhood was when he etched his goals on the wall of his grandmother’s home, writing “Future McDonald’s All-American” and “Future NBA player” in black Sharpie.

While Shirley was initially furious, she quickly turned supportive, telling him, “You’re setting goals for yourself, young man. I hope you achieve it. “Yvette was also a passionate supporter of Anthony’s athletic pursuits.

Known for her enthusiastic cheering at his games, she motivated him with both encouragement and tough love.

Anthony often blew kisses to his mom during football games while she ran alongside the field, shouting pointers and cheering him on.

Coping with Loss and Finding Motivation

The deaths of Yvette and Shirley in 2015 were devastating for Anthony. His mother passed away from cancer on January 5, and his grandmother succumbed to the same disease seven months later.

The loss left Anthony struggling to cope, but he used their memory as motivation to excel in basketball. “That just made me go harder because I know they would want to see me at the top,” he told 247Sports in 2020.

In high school and college, Anthony honored his mother and grandmother by wearing the number 5 on his jersey, symbolizing the day of the month they both passed away.

On the day of the NBA draft in 2020, Anthony kept their memory close, sitting beside paintings of the two women as he awaited his selection.

Rising to Stardom

Anthony Edwards’ talent and determination led him to become the first overall pick in the 2020 NBA draft by the Minnesota Timberwolves.

Despite initial challenges, he quickly made a name for himself, finishing second in Rookie of the Year voting and becoming an All-Star by his third season.

His performance in the 2023–24 NBA season has been particularly noteworthy, with standout performances in the playoffs, including consecutive 40-point games.

Anthony’s rise to superstardom has not only been a testament to his skill but also a tribute to the memory of his mother and grandmother.

Dispelling Rumors

Amidst his rise, there have been unfounded rumors linking Anthony to NBA legend Michael Jordan, fueled by their similar facial features and playing positions. However, these rumors have no basis in fact, and Anthony’s true family story remains a source of inspiration and strength.

Honoring His Loved Ones

Anthony’s tribute to his late mother and grandmother continues as he switches back to wearing the number 5 for the 2023-24 season, further honoring their memory.

As he continues to excel on the court, he carries their legacy with him, demonstrating resilience and dedication.

Anthony Edwards’ journey from a young boy with dreams etched on a wall to an NBA superstar is a story of resilience, family, and motivation.

Despite the profound loss of his mother and grandmother, he has risen to become a leading figure in the NBA, driven by the desire to make them proud.

As he continues to achieve new heights in his career, Anthony Edwards remains a testament to the power of family and determination.
