History of World Red Cross Day

Just after World War I, the concept of an “annual action that could spread globally and make a significant contribution to peace” was introduced. This initiative, known as the “Red Cross Truce”, was examined by an International Commission created at the 14th International Conference of the Red Cross. 1934’s 15th International Conference of the Red Cross in Tokyo authorized the organization’s report.

After World War II, in 1946, the League of Red Cross Societies (LRCS), renamed the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) in 1991, studied the Tokyo proposal. Two years later, after considering the principles of the truce and its applicability in various regions of the globe, the proposal for an annual International Red Cross Day was adopted, and the first Red Cross Day was observed on 8 May 1948. The day’s official name evolved over time, becoming “World Red Cross and Red Crescent Day” in 1984.

World Red Cross Day theme 2023: Everything we do comes  #fromtheheart

“We wish to honour the members of our communities, “the individual next door,” who are frequently the first to assist those in need in their vicinity. They could be a coworker, a local business owner, a Red Cross or Red Crescent community volunteer, someone we see at the gym, store, or market, or a neighbour who has always been by our side. However they support us, they do so from the heart and with affection.”
