IPL 2026 Mega Auction: KKR Buy Mustafizur Rahman for ₹9.20 Crore

IPL 2026 Mega Auction KKR buy Mustafizur for ₹9.20cr

Kolkata Knight Riders secured Bangladesh left-arm pacer Mustafizur Rahman at the IPL 2026 auction in Abu Dhabi, paying ₹9.20 crore after a competitive round of bidding.

Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) bought Bangladesh fast-medium bowler Mustafizur Rahman for ₹9.20 crore at the IPL 2026 auction, with the official auction listing showing a base price of ₹2 crore and the final winning bid at ₹9.20 crore. The IPL 2026 auction was confirmed for December 16 at the Etihad Arena in Abu Dhabi, according to a report citing BCCI confirmation.

What happened at the auction

Mustafizur entered the auction at a base price of ₹2 crore before KKR won him at ₹9.20 crore, as shown on the IPL’s auction page. Multiple reports described the sale as a record for a Bangladesh player in IPL auction history, following a bidding battle that included Chennai Super Kings (CSK) before KKR closed the deal.

The auction itself was staged in Abu Dhabi, with a report saying the BCCI confirmed December 16 as the date and Etihad Arena as the venue. One report also described the event as a mini-auction pool featuring 359 players (246 Indians and 113 overseas) and franchises competing to fill up to 77 slots, including 31 overseas slots.

Why KKR targeted Mustafizur

KKR’s move brings in a left-arm pace option known for variations, with one report highlighting his slower cutters and accuracy, particularly at the death. That same report noted he is valued for closing out innings and described him as holding a T20I death-overs wicket record, a claim used to underline his specialist credentials in pressure phases.

The purchase also fits KKR’s broader squad-building phase, with a report noting the franchise entered the auction with one of the biggest purses (₹64.30 crore) and up to 13 slots to fill, including six overseas slots. The same report described KKR as “three-time champions” and said the team had released several high-profile names ahead of the auction, increasing the need for proven match-winners.

Mustafizur’s IPL background

Mustafizur first made his IPL impact with Sunrisers Hyderabad in 2016, a season in which the franchise won the title and he finished as the tournament’s fifth-highest wicket-taker, according to one report. The report also states he won the IPL Emerging Player award that year and was the only overseas player to do so, a detail frequently cited when summarising his early IPL surge.

Since then, he has played for multiple IPL teams—Mumbai Indians, Rajasthan Royals, Delhi Capitals and Chennai Super Kings—before this move to KKR. In the build-up to the 2026 auction, another report described him as having featured for Delhi Capitals last season as an injury replacement, which kept him on the radar of franchises looking for experienced pace options.

What this means for IPL 2026

KKR paying ₹9.20 crore indicates franchises are still willing to spend heavily on bowlers who can handle the toughest overs, especially in the final phase of an innings. With the auction held in Abu Dhabi at the Etihad Arena (as confirmed in a report citing the BCCI), teams completed key roster decisions on a single day that can shape combinations well before the first match of the season.

For KKR, the signing strengthens their pace resources with an experienced, internationally capped left-armer, while also adding variety against right-handed-heavy batting line-ups. The next immediate focus will be how KKR completes the rest of its remaining slots and balances overseas combinations, given the squad-size and overseas-player limits reflected in the official auction framework.
