‘Star Wars’ Chief Kathleen Kennedy Stays at Disney Amid Exit Rumors

Recent reports have reignited discussions about Kathleen Kennedy’s tenure as president of Lucasfilm, suggesting she may retire before her contract concludes in 2025. However, a source familiar with the situation informed CNN that these claims lack substance, stating, “There’s nothing there right now.” The source emphasized that any official announcement regarding Kennedy’s retirement will be made public once concrete decisions are finalized. Lucasfilm and Disney representatives have not provided comments on the matter.

Kennedy’s Leadership and Revitalization of the ‘Star Wars’ Franchise

Kathleen Kennedy, a seasoned producer with a career spanning several decades, assumed the role of co-chair at Lucasfilm in 2012 alongside founder George Lucas. Following Disney’s acquisition of Lucasfilm for $4.05 billion that same year, she was appointed president, overseeing the company’s operations and the expansion of the “Star Wars” universe.

Under Kennedy’s stewardship, the “Star Wars” franchise experienced a significant revival. The sequel trilogy, comprising “The Force Awakens” (2015), “The Last Jedi” (2017), and “The Rise of Skywalker” (2019), marked the return of the saga to the big screen. These films achieved substantial box office success, with “The Force Awakens” grossing over $936 million domestically. However, each subsequent installment saw a decline in earnings, with “The Last Jedi” and “The Rise of Skywalker” grossing $620 million and $515 million domestically, respectively. Despite the diminishing returns, the trilogy outperformed the prequel series in domestic box office figures.

In addition to the main story, Lucasfilm released standalone films such as “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story” (2016) and “Solo: A Star Wars Story” (2018). “Rogue One” garnered critical acclaim and earned over $532 million domestically, while “Solo” faced challenges, earning $213 million domestically against a production budget of at least $250 million, making it the first “Star Wars” film to incur a financial loss.

Transition to Streaming and Expansion of the ‘Star Wars’ Universe

Transition to Streaming and Expansion of the 'Star Wars' Universe

Facing mixed results from theatrical releases, Lucasfilm strategically shifted focus toward streaming platforms. This transition began with the launch of “The Mandalorian” on Disney+ in November 2019, coinciding with the debut of Disney’s streaming service. The series received widespread acclaim for its storytelling, character development, and visual effects, introducing beloved characters like Din Djarin and Grogu.

Building on the success of “The Mandalorian,” Lucasfilm expanded the “Star Wars” universe with additional series, including “The Book of Boba Fett,” “Obi-Wan Kenobi,” “Ahsoka,” and “Andor.” While not all series achieved the same level of acclaim—”The Acolyte” was canceled after one season due to mixed reviews—the overall reception of these series has been positive, contributing to the enrichment of the “Star Wars” narrative tapestry.

Upcoming Projects and the Future of ‘Star Wars’

Looking ahead, Lucasfilm has announced several ambitious projects to continue expanding the “Star Wars” universe across various media platforms:

  • “The Mandalorian & Grogu”: Directed by Jon Favreau, this feature film serves as a continuation of the Disney+ series “The Mandalorian.” Co-written by Favreau and Dave Filoni, the film stars Pedro Pascal as Din Djarin, with Sigourney Weaver, Jeremy Allen White, and Jonny Coyne joining the cast. Filming commenced in California in August 2024 and concluded by December of the same year. The film is slated for release on May 22, 2026.

  • Untitled Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy Film: Academy Award-winning director Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy is set to helm a film centered on a new Jedi Order, taking place fifteen years after the events of the sequel trilogy. Daisy Ridley is expected to reprise her role as Rey Skywalker, portraying her efforts to rebuild the Jedi Order. George Nolfi has been enlisted to write the screenplay, with the project currently in pre-production.

  • Untitled James Mangold Film: Director James Mangold is developing a film exploring the origins of the Force, set approximately 25,000 years before the events of the original trilogy. Described as a “biblical epic,” the film aims to delve into the dawn of the Jedi. Beau Willimon has joined Mangold in co-writing the screenplay, with the project in the development phase.

  • Untitled Dave Filoni Film: Dave Filoni, known for his extensive work in the “Star Wars” animated series and live-action projects, is directing a film that will serve as a culmination of the interconnected stories from “The Mandalorian,” “Ahsoka,” and other related series. This project aims to provide a climactic narrative event, tying together various plot threads from the post-“Return of the Jedi” era.

  • Untitled Shawn Levy Film: Director Shawn Levy is in discussions to helm a “Star Wars” film, with actor Ryan Gosling reportedly in talks to star. Jonathan Tropper is attached to write the screenplay. While specific plot details remain under wraps, the project is poised to introduce new characters and storylines to the “Star Wars” universe.

  • New Trilogy by Simon Kinberg: Simon Kinberg, known for his work on the “X-Men” franchise, has been contracted to develop a new “Star Wars” trilogy. This series is expected to introduce new characters and narratives distinct from the Skywalker saga, marking the beginning of a new era in the “Star Wars” cinematic landscape.

While rumors regarding Kathleen Kennedy’s potential departure from Lucasfilm continue to circulate, official sources indicate that no definitive decisions have been made. Under her leadership, the “Star Wars” franchise has undergone significant transformation, transitioning from traditional theatrical releases to a robust presence in streaming media
