Kyle Shanahan Surprised by Robert Saleh’s Firing as Jets Head Coach

Kyle Shanahan Reacts Robert Saleh Firing Jets

Kyle Shanahan, the head coach of the San Francisco 49ers, expressed his surprise upon learning of the firing of his former colleague, Robert Saleh, from his role as the New York Jets head coach.

The Jets let go Saleh, who had been Shanahan’s defensive coordinator during the 49ers’ successful run to the Super Bowl, after a disappointing start to the 2024 season.

Shanahan’s Initial Reaction

In a press conference on Tuesday, Shanahan shared that he texted Saleh after hearing the news of his dismissal. “I sent him a text, but I haven’t gotten to talk to him,” Shanahan said, reflecting on his shock. “I was pretty surprised. Things can be disorienting, particularly when they’re vying for the top spot in the division.

Shanahan emphasized how Saleh’s Jets had been performing well defensively, stating, “They’re up there on defense, got a pretty good team and a chance to have a hell of a year.” Shanahan’s comments highlighted his belief that the Jets, particularly their defense, had the potential to be strong contenders in the 2024 season, making Saleh’s firing all the more unexpected.

The Firing and Team Struggles

Robert Saleh’s departure came after the Jets’ 2-3 start to the 2024 season. Despite his reputation as a defensive specialist, the Jets dismissed Saleh, who was in the fourth year of his five-year contract.

The Jets’ recent 23-17 loss to the Minnesota Vikings in London may have played a role in team owner Woody Johnson‘s decision to part ways with Saleh. Despite the Jets’ defense holding their own in the second half against a high-powered Vikings offense, the team’s overall struggles on offense may have influenced the move.

Fox Sports’ Jay Glazer reported that the sudden and unexpected nature of the decision “blindsided” Saleh himself. Despite Jets fans holding high expectations for Saleh’s leadership, the team’s offensive struggles, exacerbated by inconsistent quarterback play, appeared to surpass their defensive achievements.

Woody Johnson’s Decision

When asked about the decision to let go of Saleh, team owner Woody Johnson clarified that it was ultimately his call, although he had consulted with Jets general manager Joe Douglas.

It’s always a tough decision, but I felt it was the right move for the team,” Johnson told reporters. The Jets, under Saleh’s tenure, had been looking to build a stronger foundation, but the team’s lack of offensive firepower likely influenced Johnson’s final verdict.

Saleh’s Legacy with the Jets and the 49ers

Before becoming the Jets’ head coach in 2021, Robert Saleh had established himself as one of the NFL’s top defensive minds during his time with the 49ers. Under Shanahan’s leadership, Saleh served as the 49ers’ defensive coordinator and played a pivotal role in shaping the team’s defense during their Super Bowl run in the 2019 season.

Although the 49ers fell short of a championship, losing to the Kansas City Chiefs in Super Bowl LIV, Saleh’s defensive prowess earned him a head coaching opportunity with the Jets.

Now, with his tenure as Jets head coach unexpectedly cut short, questions arise about Saleh’s future in the NFL. Despite the speculation, Saleh reportedly has no immediate plans to join another team’s coaching staff during the 2024 season, as per Michael Silver of the San Francisco Chronicle.

However, some speculate that a return to the 49ers, should a coaching position open up, could be a possibility down the line.

What’s Next for Robert Saleh?

With Saleh’s defensive expertise still highly regarded around the league, it is likely that the former Jets coach will receive interest from other teams in the near future.

As Shanahan himself mentioned, Saleh has “a pretty good team” and was considered a top-tier defensive mind. Many believe that Saleh’s skills will find a home again, whether back in San Francisco or with another NFL team.

Despite Saleh’s decision to take a step back for the remainder of 2024, the NFL community will surely closely monitor his progress in the 2025 season and beyond.

Robert Saleh’s firing came as a shock not only to the Jets community but also to his former colleagues, including Kyle Shanahan. While the Jets’ defensive unit continued to perform well under Saleh’s guidance, the struggles on offense ultimately led to his dismissal.

As Saleh takes time to evaluate his future, many NFL insiders believe that it won’t be long before the talented coach is back on the sidelines, contributing his defensive expertise to another team.

For now, both the Jets and Saleh face uncertain futures, but with the backing of coaches like Shanahan, Saleh’s eventual return to the league seems more of a matter of when, not if.
