Rebecca Cheptegei Dies in Gasoline Attack

The sports world is mourning the tragic loss of Ugandan long-distance runner Rebecca Cheptegei, who has died after being horrifically set on fire by her boyfriend in Kenya. The 33-year-old Olympian, who competed in the 2024 Paris Olympics, suffered severe burns in the attack and passed away on Thursday, September 5, 2024, after battling for her life in the hospital for four days.

The Incident

According to reports, the shocking incident occurred on Sunday, September 1, at Cheptegei’s residence in Trans Nzoia County, located in western Kenya. Local police reported that Cheptegei’s boyfriend, Dickson Ndiema, allegedly poured gasoline on her before setting her on fire in a brutal domestic dispute. The tragic event unfolded after what is believed to have been an argument over the land on which their home was built.

Police investigations revealed that the argument escalated quickly, leading to the horrific act of violence. Trans Nzoia County Police Commander Jeremiah ole Kosiom stated that neighbors heard the couple quarreling loudly outside their house shortly before the attack took place. “During the altercation, the boyfriend was seen pouring a liquid on the woman before setting her on fire,” Kosiom told journalists, as reported by the BBC. The neighbors quickly sprang into action and attempted to extinguish the flames, but by the time they succeeded, Cheptegei had already suffered severe burns.

A police report obtained by The Associated Press (AP) indicated that Ndiema had reportedly sneaked into the compound in the afternoon while Cheptegei and their children were attending church. According to the report, Ndiema had procured petrol in preparation for the attack and waited for Cheptegei to return home. Upon her arrival, Ndiema poured the flammable liquid on her and set her on fire in an act of premeditated violence. The extent of the burns sustained by Cheptegei was severe, with medical reports indicating she had suffered burns covering 75% of her body.

Medical Treatment and Death

Cheptegei was immediately rushed to Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital (MTRH) in Eldoret, one of the largest medical facilities in the region, where doctors and specialists worked around the clock in an attempt to save her life. Dr. Owen Menach, Director of Clinical Services and Surgery at the hospital, confirmed that the burns had caused extensive damage to Cheptegei’s body, including internal organ damage, which eventually led to her death on Thursday, September 5, at around 5 a.m. local time. Dr. Menach explained that despite their best efforts, Cheptegei’s condition deteriorated rapidly due to “full organ failure.”

The gravity of her injuries was such that medical staff knew from the onset that her survival chances were slim. Dr. Menach elaborated on the difficulties faced by the medical team, stating that patients with such severe burns are particularly prone to organ failure due to the trauma inflicted on the body.

Family member, Dr. Tony Sabila, also confirmed Cheptegei’s passing to Nation Sport, expressing his devastation at losing his sister. “It is true that we lost our sister this morning, although the doctors tried to save her life, and I was there personally,” Dr. Sabila shared, deeply emotional over the tragic and senseless loss of a loved one. He thanked the medical team for their valiant efforts, but noted that the injuries sustained by Cheptegei were simply too severe.

The Athlete’s Achievements

Cheptegei’s death comes as a heartbreaking end to a promising career in athletics. The talented runner had represented Uganda on the world stage multiple times and was admired for her dedication to the sport. She participated in the 2024 Paris Olympics, where she finished in 44th place in the marathon event. Although she didn’t secure a podium finish at the Games, Cheptegei had garnered respect for her relentless spirit and determination.

Her athletic career had taken off in 2022 when she won gold at the World Mountain and Trail Running Championships in Chiang Mai, Thailand. Her performance in Thailand cemented her reputation as a world-class athlete and opened the door for her participation in major international competitions. Friends and colleagues within the athletics community have expressed their shock and disbelief at her untimely death, praising her dedication to the sport and her role as an ambassador for Uganda.

Reaction from the Uganda Athletics Federation

The Uganda Athletics Federation led tributes to Rebecca Cheptegei, releasing a heartfelt message on X (formerly Twitter), expressing their sorrow and outrage over her death. “We are deeply saddened to announce the passing of our athlete, Rebecca Cheptegei, early this morning, who tragically fell victim to domestic violence,” the post read. “As a federation, we condemn such acts and call for justice. May her soul rest in peace.”

The statement also highlighted the widespread issue of domestic violence and called for increased awareness and action to protect victims of such crimes. Many within Uganda and the broader African athletics community shared their condolences, expressing heartbreak over the senseless loss of such a bright star.

The Ongoing Investigation

Following the incident, Kenyan authorities launched an investigation into the attack. Trans Nzoia County Police Commander Jeremiah ole Kosiom confirmed that Ndiema, who also sustained serious burns during the altercation, remains under police watch at Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital, where he is receiving treatment. Once his condition stabilizes, he is expected to face charges related to the attack on Cheptegei. Authorities are currently working to gather more information about the circumstances leading to the incident, including statements from witnesses and neighbors.

The domestic violence dispute is reported to have centered around a disagreement over land ownership, with local reports suggesting that this was not the first time the couple had clashed over the matter. The argument, however, tragically escalated to fatal violence, leaving the community in shock.

Domestic Violence Awareness

This tragedy shines a glaring light on the pervasive issue of domestic violence, not only in Kenya but across the globe. The brutal act against Cheptegei is a painful reminder of the dangers many women face in their homes. Organizations across Kenya and Uganda have condemned the attack and called for justice, urging authorities to take swift and appropriate legal action against Ndiema.

Domestic violence remains a significant challenge, and advocates continue to call for more resources to protect victims and prevent such tragedies. Services like the National Domestic Violence Hotline in the United States offer a vital lifeline to those experiencing abuse. The hotline can be reached at 1-800-799-7233 or through their website, thehotline.org. It provides confidential support and resources for victims in more than 170 languages, 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

A Heartbreaking Loss

Rebecca Cheptegei’s death has left a deep void in the hearts of her family, friends, and the sports community. Her promising career as an athlete was abruptly and violently cut short. Her story is not only one of a life lost too soon but also a painful reminder of the devastating impact of domestic violence. As her loved ones and the athletics community mourn her passing, the call for justice and for more action to prevent domestic violence grows louder.

Cheptegei’s legacy will not only be remembered for her achievements on the track but also as a beacon for raising awareness about domestic violence. While justice is sought in her case, her story will hopefully serve as a catalyst for change, shining a light on the need to protect the vulnerable and ensure no one else falls victim to such a senseless act of violence.

May her soul rest in peace.
