Attention Apple TV Users: Netflix Drops Support for Older Models

Netflix Ends Support Older Apple TV Models

Netflix has announced that it will no longer support its streaming service on second- and third-generation Apple TV devices. This change is set to take effect after July 31, 2024. The company communicated the decision to customers via email, stating that the move is intended to “maintain the best possible Netflix experience.”

Affected Devices and Historical Context

The third-generation Apple TV model debuted in 2012 after the second-generation model in 2010. Both devices are considered “obsolete” by Apple, which typically discontinues service for hardware seven years after it has stopped selling the product.

These older Apple TVs predate the release of tvOS and do not have access to the App Store, relying instead on a set of pre-installed apps.

Reasons Behind the Decision

Netflix has not provided detailed reasons for ending support on these devices, but it mentioned security concerns in an email to The Verge. “From time to time, Netflix retires support for older devices to ensure our security commitment to our members,” said Kumiko Hidaka, Netflix’s communications director.

This move is part of a broader trend where Netflix has ceased support for other aging devices. For example, in 2019, Netflix stopped working on older Samsung and Vizio smart TVs and first-generation Roku boxes due to a transition from Windows Media DRM to Microsoft’s PlayReady DRM.

User Impact and Recommendations

For users still relying on these older Apple TVs, the end of Netflix support will necessitate an upgrade to continue using the service. Options include the latest Apple TV 4K, which starts at $129 and offers access to a complete App Store, HDR video, Dolby Atmos audio, and smart home hub features.

Verizon is currently offering a $40 discount on the latest Apple TV 4K for those looking to upgrade.

Alternatives to Apple TV

For those not committed to the Apple ecosystem, there are several viable alternatives. Streaming devices from Amazon, Google, and Roku provide robust options for accessing Netflix and other streaming services. Many modern smart TVs also come with built-in Netflix apps, offering another alternative for users considering a new TV set.

Future of Streaming on Apple Devices

Fourth-generation and newer Apple TV models will continue to support Netflix, ensuring that users with more recent hardware can enjoy uninterrupted service.

These models benefit from the updated tv OS, access to the App Store, and regular software updates, which help maintain compatibility with evolving streaming standards.

Netflix’s decision to end support for second- and third-generation Apple TVs marks a shift towards ensuring a consistent and secure streaming experience for its users.

While this change may inconvenience some users, the availability of numerous upgrade options and alternative devices ensures that fans of the streaming service can continue to enjoy their favorite shows and movies without significant disruption.

As technology continues to advance, maintaining up-to-date hardware becomes essential for accessing the latest features and security enhancements in streaming services.
