The director of Netflix’s dystopic South Korean TV series “Squid Game” voiced optimism that the show will be renewed for a second season.
In an interview on Monday, writer-director Hwang Dong-hyuk revealed, “We are in talks for Season Two.” “It’s all in my head. We’re at the brainstorming stages because I have the core storyline and general plan,” he said.
“I’m going to go ahead and say there will be a second season,” Hwang said, “but I can’t say when.”
“He will come back, he will come back and do something about this planet,” the filmmaker remarked, alluding to actor Lee Jung-Jae, who plays protagonist Seong Gi-hun. Hwang, Lee, and other cast members attended a special Hollywood screening on Monday to commemorate the show’s triumph, which was one of Netflix’s biggest hits ever.
The “Squid Game,” in which debt-ridden people participate in a fatal game for a fortune, has sparked Halloween costumes and themed protests, among other things, at the United Nations global climate meeting in Glasgow, Scotland. The impact of Hwang’s creation “feels so strange,” he remarked. “It’s almost as if I’m living in a magical universe myself.”
“I can’t believe this is happening,” actor Lee expressed his disbelief. “I had no idea it would grow to this size, and I never imagined it would.” I never imagined we’d receive so much love, so being here and in front of you, everything, makes me feel so grateful.” The success of the series is similar to that of Oscar winner “Parasite,” which likewise depicted the disparity between rich and poor in South Korea.
“Everyone has that wrath,” actor Park Hae-soo, who portrays Cho Sang-woo, said, “but I think the Koreans are really able to convey that honestly.”
