Angelina Jolie Says She No Longer Recognizes America in Free Speech Plea

Angelina Jolie Says She No Longer Recognizes America in Free Speech Plea

Hollywood star Angelina Jolie stepped into political debate during her appearance at the San Sebastián International Film Festival in Spain on Sunday. She was there to promote her latest film Couture, in which she plays Maxine, an American filmmaker who receives a life-changing cancer diagnosis.

During a press conference before the premiere, Jolie was asked a sensitive question: what fears does she carry as both an artist and an American? The 50-year-old actress took a long pause, sighed deeply, and admitted it was not an easy question to answer.

Her response became one of the most talked-about moments of the festival.

“I Don’t Recognize My Country”

Jolie said candidly:

  • “I love my country, but at this time, I don’t recognize my country.”
  • She explained that her perspective has always been shaped by an international lifestyle. She has raised her children across different cultures, has global friendships, and views herself as part of a wider, interconnected world.
  • For Jolie, anything that divides people or restricts freedom of expression is “very dangerous.”

She went further, warning that the current global climate requires people to think carefully before speaking casually:

“These are very serious times,” she said. “We have to be careful not to dismiss how heavy these moments are that we’re living in together.”

Her comments were widely reported by The Guardian and The Hollywood Reporter, sparking renewed debate about free expression in America and beyond.

A Broader Context: Free Speech Concerns

Jolie’s remarks come at a time when free speech is a growing topic of controversy in the United States. Political polarization, censorship debates, and cultural division have created an atmosphere where artists and public figures often find their words heavily scrutinized.

Recently, this tension has also touched the entertainment industry itself. Late-night host Jimmy Kimmel’s show was suspended after comments linked to political issues and conservative activist Charlie Kirk’s death triggered widespread backlash. Jolie did not directly reference that case, but her comments about free expression landed at the same time, making them even more striking.

Jolie’s Longstanding Desire to Leave the U.S.

This is not the first time Jolie has expressed discomfort with living in the U.S. In a 2023 interview with The Hollywood Reporter, she revealed that she has wanted to move abroad for years. However, her custody arrangement with ex-husband Brad Pitt meant she needed to remain in Los Angeles while raising their younger children.

  • Jolie said she only stays in L.A. because of the divorce case.
  • “As soon as they’re 18, I’ll be able to leave,” she said, referring to her twins Vivienne and Knox, now 17.
  • She added that she values privacy, safety, and peace for her “big family,” something she feels is harder to maintain in Los Angeles compared to other places she has lived around the world.

Jolie’s Family and International Lifestyle

The actress is mother to six children:

  • Maddox (24)
  • Pax (21)
  • Zahara (20)
  • Shiloh (19)
  • Vivienne and Knox (17)

She has often spoken about raising them with international exposure, including long stays in Cambodia, where she has family ties and humanitarian projects. Jolie said she wants her children to experience “humanity across the world,” which she feels is very different from what she grew up with in Hollywood.

According to People Magazine, Jolie is already preparing to put her Los Angeles home on the market and is considering several possible destinations once her twins turn 18. The outlet reported that she “never wanted to live in L.A. full time” and will be “very happy” when she is able to relocate.

Divorce From Brad Pitt and a Long Legal Battle

Jolie’s personal life has been under the spotlight since her high-profile separation from Brad Pitt in 2016. After just two years of marriage, she filed for divorce, beginning what became an eight-year legal battle over custody, property, and finances.

  • The divorce settlement was only reached in late 2024, according to Fox News Digital.
  • Her lawyer James Simon said Jolie was “exhausted but relieved” that at least one chapter of the long process had closed.
  • Despite public speculation, sources close to Jolie insist she rarely speaks ill of Pitt, privately or publicly, choosing instead to focus on peace and stability for her family.

Insiders also revealed that Jolie has encouraged her children to focus on making change through law and activism rather than getting caught up in personal battles.

A Voice for International Humanitarianism

Jolie’s life beyond Hollywood has long been defined by humanitarian work. She has served as a UNHCR Special Envoy and has been involved in refugee assistance, education, and global human rights advocacy. Her international background, combined with her work across continents, has given her a perspective that goes beyond Hollywood stardom.

At the San Sebastián Film Festival, her message tied these experiences back to her artistic and personal fears: that divisions, censorship, and restrictions on freedom pose serious risks to society.

Looking Ahead

With her film Couture now making the festival rounds, Jolie continues to balance her acting career with her advocacy work. But her remarks show that she sees herself less as a Hollywood celebrity and more as a global citizen, deeply concerned about the state of democracy and freedom in her home country.

Her comments have reignited public debate about whether artists should speak out on political and social issues, and whether America itself is living up to its ideals of freedom.

As she put it bluntly:

“I love my country, but right now, I don’t recognize my country.”
