At least 16 people were shot early Sunday in downtown Sacramento, California, six of whom died, and police said no suspects had been apprehended.

Several streets in downtown Sacramento, just blocks from the state Capitol building and the Golden 1 Center, where the Sacramento Kings NBA team plays, were closed as officers responded to the gun violence, according to the Sacramento Police Department. The victims’ conditions were not immediately known, according to authorities.

According to Sacramento Police Chief Kathy Lester, the incident occurred around 2 a.m. on the corner of 10th and K Street in a famous nightlife area.

According to Lester, police officers were in the neighborhood when they heard the gunfire.

“There was quite a crowd in the neighborhood. We’re not sure if it was a club or an event “Lester remarked.

Officers arrived quickly, she added and began offering medical assistance to the victims.

Six individuals were killed in the shooting, according to Lester, while another ten were injured and sent to hospitals. Lester called for the public’s help in identifying the shooter or shooters, stating that no one has been apprehended.

After a municipal council member called him about the shooting, community activist Barry Accius of Voice of the Youth came to the scene at 2:30 a.m.
