Kim Kardashian Paris Robbery: All 8 ‘Grandpa Robbers’ Sentenced

Kim Kardashian Paris robbery

After nearly eight years since the shocking armed robbery of reality star Kim Kardashian West during Paris Fashion Week in October 2016, a Paris court has finally delivered its verdict. In a decision announced on Friday, eight men were found guilty for their roles in the meticulously planned heist that stunned the world.

The case, which has since become one of the most publicized celebrity crimes of the past decade, involved a gang of aging criminals dubbed the “Grandpa robbers” by French media due to their advanced age. The accused were aged between 60 and 72 at the time of arrest and had previous records related to organized crime.

Who Was Convicted and What Were the Sentences?

The man identified as the ringleader, Aomar Aït Khedache, was sentenced to eight years in prison, with five years suspended. Khedache, now 68 years old and suffering from partial deafness and limited speech capabilities, was among the central figures who helped plan and execute the heist.

Seven of his co-defendants were also convicted of charges including:

  • Armed robbery in an organized gang
  • Kidnapping and illegal sequestration
  • Possession and transportation of illegal weapons
  • Aggravated theft and complicity in criminal acts

Each received varying sentences between five to seven years, with large portions suspended. However, none of them will serve additional time in custody because they have already spent significant time in pretrial detention, which under French law is subtracted from the final sentence.

Two Acquitted, One Ordered to Pay Damages

Among the 10 defendants on trial, two were acquitted on charges of complicity. However, one of those acquitted was ordered to pay €5,000 (approximately $5,682 USD) in compensatory damages to the victims—specifically Kim Kardashian and the concierge who was tied up during the crime.

The court decision also took into account the defendants’ advanced ages, health issues, and previous time spent in jail when determining sentences. One of the original 12 suspects had died, and another was deemed mentally unfit to stand trial due to advanced Alzheimer’s disease.

Inside the 2016 Paris Robbery: A Terrifying Ordeal

How the Heist Unfolded

The robbery occurred in the early morning hours of October 3, 2016, when Kardashian was staying at a luxury private residence at 8 Rue Tronchet, near the Élysée Palace. She had attended a fashion event earlier that evening. Around 2:30 a.m., five men disguised as police officers infiltrated the building, subdued the concierge at gunpoint, and forced him to give them access to Kardashian’s apartment.

Once inside, two men entered her room. Kardashian was alone, wearing only a bathrobe. The intruders handcuffed her wrists, bound her legs, duct-taped her mouth, and locked her in the bathtub. The robbers then stole approximately $10 million worth of jewelry, including her $4 million 20-carat engagement ring, which she had shared online just hours earlier.

Kardashian Feared for Her Life

During the trial, Kardashian provided emotional testimony via video, recalling the fear and helplessness she felt. She stated she genuinely believed the men would either rape or kill her.

“I have babies, I have to make it home,” she reportedly begged the robbers, referring to her children with rapper and ex-husband Kanye West.

Her voice shook and tears welled up as she described the mental toll the incident took on her life. The trauma, she said, permanently changed how she handles her public image, security, and personal freedom.

Courtroom Apology from the Ringleader

As the trial neared its conclusion, the court read aloud a letter of apology from Khedache, the ringleader. Although present in court, Khedache could not speak directly due to health issues. In his letter, he acknowledged his guilt and apologized for the lasting emotional damage he had caused.

“I want to come to you as a human being and say how much I regret my act,” Khedache wrote.

Kardashian, visibly moved, responded that she forgave him as a human being. But she emphasized that the trauma and fear of that night could not be undone.

“It doesn’t change the emotion and the feelings and the trauma,” she said.

Reaction from the Court and Legal Teams

Judge Highlights Psychological Harm

In his closing remarks, Judge David De Pas acknowledged that while the robbery did not involve physical violence or bloodshed, it left deep emotional scars on Kardashian and the building staff.

“You have caused harm, even if you did not strike, if blood has not been shed—you have caused fear,” he stated. He emphasized that psychological trauma is also a serious form of harm under French law.

Kardashian’s Public Statement

In a post-trial statement, Kardashian thanked French authorities for pursuing the case thoroughly:

“The crime was the most terrifying experience of my life, leaving a lasting impact on me and my family. While I’ll never forget what happened, I believe in the power of growth and accountability and pray for healing for all.”

Her legal team added:

“Kim appreciates the court’s decision and once again thanks the French authorities for treating her with great respect throughout the process. It has been a long journey… to her standing courageously in a historic Paris courtroom to confront these criminals. She looks forward to putting this tragic episode behind her as she continues working to improve the criminal justice system on behalf of victims and the innocent.”

Defense Lawyer Welcomes Verdict

Gabriel Dumenil, lawyer for defendant Yunice Abbas, who was sentenced to seven years (with five suspended), praised the outcome:

“It’s a very fair decision, it’s a very just decision. (Abbas) is very happy to be back with his family tonight.”

Broader Impact and Legacy

A Wake-Up Call for Celebrity Security

The robbery sent shockwaves through the global entertainment industry. Kardashian’s high-profile social media presence, which often included real-time sharing of location and luxury items, became a focal point of criticism and reflection.

Since the incident, Kardashian has significantly tightened her personal security protocols, avoided real-time location posts, and minimized display of valuable items online.

French Authorities’ Handling

Despite early criticism of security lapses in Paris, French authorities were widely praised for their methodical investigation, which included DNA matching, surveillance footage analysis, and phone tracking. Their diligence ultimately led to the arrest of all principal suspects within a few months.

While the sentences handed down have sparked mixed reactions—with some viewing them as too lenient given the psychological toll—the conclusion of the case marks a symbolic closure to one of the most traumatic chapters in Kardashian’s life.

As the world watches, Kim Kardashian continues to leverage her influence to advocate for criminal justice reform, ensuring that her traumatic experience contributes to greater awareness, victim protection, and systemic change.
