The largest of the Dodecanese islands, Rhodes is the perfect spot to spend a well-deserved vacation. One could happily while away weeks on this sun-soaked paradise but, just for fun, we thought we’d see what we could cram into 24 hours. So, whether you’re into holiday anarchy or just want to see what you can squeeze into your remaining day on the island, here’s our guide on how to spend the best possible 24 hours in Rhodes.
Start Things Sweetly
We’re starting our day in the morning, having landed in Greece hungry for a little something to set us up for the day. Rhodes Old Town is the perfect place to start with a stroll through the winding streets. You’ll really be able to soak up the atmosphere and marvel at some of the beautiful old architecture. The destination for this morning’s pitstop is Nireas, a family-owned restaurant that happens to serve some of the best baklavas on the island. For those who haven’t tried it before, baklava is a sticky sweet pastry dish, made with layers of filo pastry that are buttered, sprinkled with nuts, baked, and then drenched with syrup. It’s certainly not a dish for those who are watching their waistlines, but it is absolutely delicious and a traditional dish on the island. Nireas is open during the morning and has a gorgeous outdoor terrace where you can enjoy a thick Greek coffee and a piece of baklava or two.
Sun Yourself On Agathi Beach
It wouldn’t be a holiday to a Greek island without spending plenty of time on the beach, so heading straight there is what’s next on the agenda. Agathi is a picturesque little beach that’s sparkling rose gold in colour thanks to the unusual combination of rocks that make up the sand. The water is crystal clear and, during the high season, you’re able to hire a sunbed in the sheltered cove so you can really make this your base for the day. You can also choose from one of three restaurants that are dotted around the immediate area in order to enjoy some lunch. Fresh fish is always on offer and comes highly recommended but if seafood isn’t your thing, then try a fresh Greek salad or a homemade kebab. Before you hit the beach it’s worthwhile checking out the Medieval castle of Faraklos which is just a short trip up from the cove. The castle is steeped in Ancient Greek history so it’s important to give yourself a good hour to explore.
Experience Faliraki’s Nightlife
We enjoy a bit of nightlife as much as the next person and have written reviews about it for all kinds of places, but when it comes to islands the choice can be a little smaller. However, despite the smaller choice of clubs, the nightlife in the village of Faliraki will be an experience you won’t forget. Just a short hop south from the old town, we’re starting to make our way back to the airport now, but it would be rude not to pop into Liquid Night Club to see what it’s all about. The great news is that if you haven’t visited the club before then entry is totally free. There are two different floors, which play chart music and dance music respectively. The drinks are cheap and there are some great views from the bar – what more could you want from a seaside club?
Round Things Off at Casino Rodos
Once you’ve finished up at Liquid Night Club, it’s time to head back towards the airport, but we do have time for one more stop. The Ancient Greeks are often credited with creating dice games, so it makes sense to indulge in some during your night in Rhodes. The Casino Rodos is a stunning building right in the heart of Rhodes Town, so it makes the perfect final stop before catching your flight home. At the casino, you’ll have a wide choice of slot machine games, as well as a selection of table games that you’ll quickly pick up the rules to. Take your time to learn the rules thoroughly and you’ll be sure to enjoy your final hours of the holiday as much as the first.
