Jeff Bezos’ Lavish Venice Wedding ‘Won’t Sink City,’ Says Mayor

The romantic canals of Venice are preparing to host one of the most talked-about celebrity weddings in recent years — the marriage of Amazon founder Jeff Bezos and former journalist turned philanthropist and helicopter pilot, Lauren Sánchez. The couple, engaged since at least 2023, have confirmed their nuptials will take place in late June 2025, turning the serene Venetian lagoon into a temporary base for billionaire festivities.

While rumors and previous wedding hoaxes caused confusion last year, this time, officials from Venice have issued a formal statement acknowledging preparations for the highly anticipated event. The ceremony, reportedly happening between June 24 and 26, is set to occur aboard Bezos’ ultra-luxurious $500 million megayacht, Koru, moored in the Venice lagoon.

Lavish Wedding Plans Confirmed by City Officials

Despite previous speculations about extravagant Aspen ceremonies and budgets of $600 million, which Bezos publicly refuted, the Venice wedding seems to be a genuine event. The Venice mayor’s office, in a statement reported by the Associated Press, confirmed that the city is indeed preparing for a major private event involving the Amazon founder and his fiancée.

Mayor Luigi Brugnaro addressed rising public concerns over whether such a high-profile wedding would burden Venice’s fragile infrastructure. “Venice is used to being the stage for events and shows every week, without significant impacts,” the mayor’s statement said, noting that only 200 guests are expected.

Despite Venice being a UNESCO World Heritage Site currently under scrutiny for over-tourism and environmental risks, the city insisted that the upcoming event would not disrupt its daily life or operations.

Rather than hosting the ceremony in a palace or hotel within Venice’s historic city center, Bezos and Sánchez have chosen to hold the event aboard Koru, the 417-foot sailing superyacht delivered to Bezos in 2023.

This decision is being seen as a thoughtful way to avoid adding further strain on Venice’s infrastructure, especially after the 2019 floods and warnings from UNESCO and environmental watchdogs like the Union of Concerned Scientists. Koru, named after a Māori symbol meaning “new beginnings,” is not only an architectural marvel but also one of the world’s largest sailing yachts, complete with lavish decks, support yachts, and accommodations for high-profile guests.

Sources close to the couple revealed to CNN and Vanity Fair that while the wedding will be aboard Koru, the guests are expected to stay at top-tier hotels in Venice, including the Gritti Palace and Aman Venice, where rooms can cost up to $3,200 per night. Koru will remain anchored in the lagoon during the celebrations, providing a private, floating venue that blends luxury with discretion.

Celebrity Guest List: Who’s Expected to Attend

The wedding guest list is as high-profile as the couple themselves, with Page Six and other entertainment outlets reporting appearances by some of the world’s most recognizable faces from Hollywood, Silicon Valley, politics, and fashion.

Confirmed and rumored guests include:

  • Leonardo DiCaprio
  • Eva Longoria
  • Orlando Bloom and Katy Perry
  • Barbra Streisand
  • Kim Kardashian and Kris Jenner
  • Film producer Brian Grazer
  • Singer-songwriter Jewel, who previously performed at Donald Trump’s 2017 inauguration

Notably, several Trump family members have also reportedly received invitations. These include:

This political connection has added a layer of intrigue and controversy, given Bezos’ complicated past with both the Trump administration and media narratives around his ownership of The Washington Post.

From Denials to Confirmations: A Look Back at the Wedding Rumors

This is not the first time wedding rumors have surrounded Bezos and Sánchez. In December 2024, several tabloids and digital outlets claimed the couple was planning a $600 million Aspen wedding during the holidays. The reports spread quickly across social media, fueling speculation and excitement.

However, Bezos himself took to X (formerly Twitter) to refute those rumors, calling the entire narrative false.

“This whole thing is completely false — none of this is happening,” Bezos wrote at the time. He also criticized the media for spreading misinformation, saying:
“Now lies can get ALL the way around the world before the truth can get its pants on. So be careful out there folks and don’t be gullible.”

The billionaire, who acquired the Washington Post in 2013, has recently faced backlash for reportedly planning to “radically overhaul” the publication’s opinion section. According to NPR, these changes could include prioritizing libertarian viewpoints while excluding opposing perspectives, which has sparked concern over media neutrality and journalistic integrity.

Environmental Concerns and Public Reaction in Venice

Despite reassurances from city officials, some Venetians remain skeptical or outright critical of hosting such an event. In interviews conducted by The Guardian, local residents expressed mixed feelings about the spectacle.

Some see it as an economic opportunity and a publicity boost for the city’s tourism sector, while others view it as a distraction from real issues — especially as Venice continues to battle climate change, rising sea levels, and infrastructure degradation.

Venice is already under close observation by UNESCO, which issued a report in 2023 warning that the city risks being added to its List of World Heritage in Danger due to overtourism and poor management. Although it avoided formal designation as endangered last year, UNESCO warned that without stronger protective measures, the city’s long-term survival remains uncertain.

“Venice is going to really be strangled to death from climate change and tourism,” said Adam Markham, deputy director of the Union of Concerned Scientists, in 2023. “Officials and agencies need the push now to act faster, bigger and do more.”

Venice Gears Up for a Careful Celebration

As one of the most watched weddings of the decade approaches, the city of Venice is walking a tightrope — balancing its global appeal with its environmental responsibilities.

While Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sánchez’s wedding is expected to be extravagant, all signs point to a highly organized, city-coordinated event aimed at minimizing disruption. Hosting the ceremony aboard a yacht in the lagoon rather than within the historic city center is a calculated decision that demonstrates both opulence and, arguably, some environmental consideration.

The couple’s decision to make Venice a part of their milestone moment highlights the city’s timeless charm, but also brings renewed focus on its challenges. For now, Venice seems prepared — not just to host the wedding of the year, but to do so while maintaining its dignity, heritage, and delicate ecosystem.
