John Cena’s Title Match Wins Ranked: Worst to Best

John Cena's Title Match Wins Ranked

With the Monday Night Wars in the past and the WCW-ECW invasion fading from memory, WWE entered a new era in 2002. The company introduced the brand split, dividing its roster between “Raw” and “SmackDown.” This provided more opportunities for superstars to shine individually. However, to make it to the top, WWE Chairman Vince McMahon emphasized that every performer needed to display “ruthless aggression.”

One individual who embodied this philosophy from the start was John Cena.

Cena made his WWE debut on “SmackDown” in June 2002 against Kurt Angle, immediately showcasing the kind of aggressive determination McMahon sought. Despite initial setbacks that nearly led to his release, Cena ultimately found his footing and began a journey that would cement him as one of WWE’s most successful and beloved superstars.

Throughout his career, Cena amassed an incredible collection of championships, breaking records and delivering legendary matches. Below is a ranking of all his championship victories, categorized from the least impactful to the most legendary.

John Cena’s Championship Victories Ranked

28. WWE Tag Team Championship (with The Miz) – February 21, 2011

By 2011, John Cena was the undisputed face of WWE, regularly appearing on “Raw” and headlining major events. However, not all his championship wins were memorable. One such example occurred in the build-up to WrestleMania XXVII when Cena teamed with then-WWE Champion The Miz to challenge Heath Slater and Justin Gabriel of The Corre for the WWE Tag Team Championship.

Cena and Miz surprisingly won the match, but their reign was over in minutes. Immediately after their victory, The Corre invoked their rematch clause, and Miz betrayed Cena, leading to an immediate title loss. This short-lived and unmemorable reign earns its place at the bottom of Cena’s championship victories.

27. WWE Championship (Elimination Chamber Match) – February 21, 2010

On the road to WrestleMania XXVI, Cena participated in a brutal Elimination Chamber match against Sheamus, Triple H, Randy Orton, Kofi Kingston, and Ted DiBiase for the WWE Championship. After an intense battle, Cena emerged victorious by forcing Triple H to submit, securing his sixth WWE Championship.

However, his victory celebration was cut short. Immediately after winning, Vince McMahon announced that Cena would have to defend his title on the spot against Batista. The exhausted Cena had no chance against a fresh Batista, who quickly hit a Batista Bomb and pinned him. This deflating moment made Cena’s championship win feel like an afterthought, diminishing its overall impact.

26. WWE Tag Team Championship (with David Otunga) – October 24, 2010

In mid-2010, the rebellious faction Nexus, led by Wade Barrett, shook WWE to its core. Cena found himself entangled with the group and, after losing to Barrett at Hell in a Cell, was forced to join Nexus.

During his reluctant membership, Cena and fellow Nexus member David Otunga challenged Cody Rhodes and Drew McIntyre for the WWE Tag Team Championship at the Bragging Rights pay-per-view. They won the titles, but the reign was meaningless—Otunga, under orders from Barrett, intentionally lost the belts the next night to Heath Slater and Justin Gabriel. This brief and inconsequential reign added little to Cena’s legacy.

25. OVW Southern Tag Team Championship (with Rico Constantino) – August 15, 2001

Before reaching WWE’s main roster, Cena competed in Ohio Valley Wrestling (OVW), WWE’s developmental territory at the time. Wrestling under the moniker “The Prototype,” he teamed up with Rico Constantino to compete for the OVW Southern Tag Team Championship.

The duo won the vacant titles in a tournament, but their reign was brief. They eventually lost the belts to a young team known as the Minnesota Stretching Crew—featuring future WWE stars Brock Lesnar and Shelton Benjamin. While significant as Cena’s first tag title win, it pales in comparison to his later achievements.

24. UPW Heavyweight Championship – April 27, 2000

Cena’s journey in professional wrestling began in Rick Bassman’s Ultimate Pro Wrestling (UPW), where he developed his “Prototype” persona. Competing as a cyborg-like character, Cena showcased his immense potential early on.

In April 2000, he won the UPW Heavyweight Championship by defeating Smelly (real name: Mike Bell). This victory marked Cena’s first taste of championship gold in the wrestling business. However, the significance of this title remains minimal in the grand scheme of his career, especially since he lost it back to Smelly just a month later.

23. World Tag Team Championship (with Batista) – August 4, 2008

World Tag Team Championship

Leading into SummerSlam 2008, John Cena and Batista found themselves at odds after an altercation during a match. However, before their inevitable clash, they were forced to team up against Cody Rhodes and Ted DiBiase for the World Tag Team Championship.

Despite their tensions, Cena and Batista managed to win the match and the titles. However, their partnership was short-lived, and they lost the belts back to Rhodes and DiBiase just a week later. This reign is one of many examples where Cena’s tag team championship runs felt like a forced storyline device rather than a meaningful accomplishment.

22. WWE United States Championship vs. Booker T – October 3, 2004

In 2004, Cena was still carving his path to the top. He entered into a Best of Five series with Booker T for the vacant WWE United States Championship. After trading wins, Cena won the decisive match at No Mercy to reclaim the title.

However, his victory was overshadowed when he lost the championship to Carlito just days later. This sudden loss diminished the significance of the win, making it one of his least impactful title reigns.

21. WWE United States Championship vs. Carlito – November 16, 2004

After being “injured” in a storyline attack by Carlito’s bodyguard Jesús, Cena returned with vengeance in November 2004. He challenged Carlito on “SmackDown” and swiftly defeated him in under a minute to reclaim the WWE United States Championship.

Although Cena’s dominant return was exciting, the match itself was a one-sided squash, making it less significant than his other championship victories.

More Championship Wins to Be Ranked…

John Cena’s championship legacy is extensive and filled with memorable moments. From his early tag team days to his reigns as WWE Champion, each title victory contributed to his legendary status. Stay tuned as we continue ranking and analyzing more of Cena’s most impactful wins, including his classic battles with Randy Orton, Edge, and CM Punk.

John Cena’s wrestling career is filled with championship victories that span decades. Some reigns were historic and changed the industry, while others were short-lived and forgettable. Regardless, Cena’s impact on professional wrestling remains undeniable, and his championship accolades continue to solidify his place among the greatest WWE superstars of all time.
