Emperor Frederick Barbarossa

A long time ago in the year 1155, a man named Frederick Barbarossa became the Holy Roman Emperor. He was crowned at a big church called St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome, Italy. This was a big deal because the Holy Roman Empire was a powerful group of lands in Europe. Frederick Barbarossa went on to rule for many years and fought in a lot of wars.

Many years later in 1538, two important leaders named Charles V and Francis I signed a special agreement called the Truce of Nice. Charles V was the Holy Roman Emperor and Francis I was the King of France. They had been fighting a war in Italy but decided to make peace. The truce helped end the war and brought some calm to Europe.

Crown of Ireland Act

In another country called Ireland in 1542, a big decision was made by their government. They passed a law called the Crown of Ireland Act which gave the English King Henry VIII a new title. He would now also be called the King of Ireland. This meant that England had more control over Ireland.

Battle of Dungeness

Across the sea in 1629, a sea battle happened near a place called Dungeness. A Dutch commander named Piet Heyn fought against some ships called the Dunkirkers. The Dunkirkers worked for Spain and attacked other ships to take their goods. But Piet Heyn and his crew beat them in the battle.

Philadelphia Founded

On June 18, 1682, a city called Philadelphia was founded in North America. An Englishman named William Penn started the city as part of a new colony called Pennsylvania. He wanted it to be a place where people could live freely and practice their religion. Philadelphia would go on to become a very important city in American history.
