Netflix games will be accessible on iOS through the App Store. Netflix entered the gaming market earlier this month with the launch of a mobile game service for Android subscribers.
According to The Verge, while Netflix has confirmed that an iOS version of the service is in the works, Apple’s App Store regulations will prevent Netflix from making games available through its app.
Apple forbids third-party apps from acting as a game center, causing controversy among cloud gaming providers like Xbox Cloud Gaming, Nvidia GeForce Now, and Google Stadia.
Cloud gaming companies can only get around this by offering their games via a web app as Facebook did earlier. According to insiders, Netflix will circumvent Apple’s limitations by putting its games on the App Store. This means you could not download or play games via the Netflix app. You’ll be able to launch them.
The service presently operates this way on Android: the games are neatly packaged in a dedicated tab within the Netflix app but must be downloaded separately from the Google Play Store. While this setup is adequate for an all-in-one gaming service, it is insufficient for an all-in-one gaming service. Users should be able to download and play games from within the service.
Netflix’s games may be available on the cloud in the future. This is fine for Android, but Apple’s regulations make cloud gaming nearly impossible to succeed, forcing services to rely on rudimentary web apps.
If and when Netflix decides to adopt cloud gaming, it’s unclear what would happen to Netflix on iOS.
