“This is supposed to be a slow season for Erling Haaland, and he’s still top scorer,” remarked former Tottenham and England midfielder Jermaine Jenas on BBC’s Match of the Day.
Now, it’s official. Manchester City and Norway forward Erling Haaland has clinched the 2023-24 Premier League Golden Boot, awarded to the leading scorer in England’s top flight.
Haaland concluded the season with 27 goals, five more than his closest rival, Chelsea and England forward Cole Palmer.
This achievement marks Haaland’s second consecutive Golden Boot, making him the first player to win the award outright in back-to-back seasons since Tottenham’s Harry Kane, who scored 25 goals in 2015-16 and 29 in 2016-17.
Haaland’s Impact on Manchester City
Since joining Manchester City from Borussia Dortmund for £51.2 million in June 2022, Haaland has been a critical asset for the team. He has scored more than one-third of Manchester City’s Premier League goals.
Last season, City won the league with 94 goals; this season, they surpassed that with 96 goals, with Haaland contributing significantly.
In his two seasons at City, Haaland has scored a remarkable 63 goals in 65 league appearances. This season, despite some setbacks, he remained a dominant force on the field.
His performance was instrumental in propelling Manchester City to their historic fourth successive league title.
Overcoming Challenges
Haaland’s journey this season wasn’t entirely smooth. He faced criticism and challenges, including missing 10 league and cup games in December and January due to a foot fracture.
However, his ability to bounce back and perform at an elite level was undeniable. “All those Premier League strikers thought they had a chance for the Golden Boot, and Haaland just went into overdrive,” added Jenas.
In April, former Manchester United captain Roy Keane commented on Sky Sports that Haaland was “in front of goal, the best in the world, but for his general play, he’s almost like a League Two player.”
This statement came after City’s 0-0 home draw against Arsenal on March 31, which left City third in the table, three points behind leaders Liverpool with nine games remaining.
Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola responded to Keane’s remarks by calling Haaland the “best striker in the world,” while former Premier League striker Chris Sutton labeled the League Two criticism as “total nonsense.”
Sutton added, “He was brought in for a specific role. To degrade him and suggest he is a lower league player is total nonsense and unfair on Erling Haaland.”
Haaland’s Stellar Stats
Despite a brief dip in form, Haaland finished the season strong, scoring nine goals in the last seven league games. “He had a dip in form that lasted about twelve and a half minutes,” joked former England captain Gary Lineker on MOTD.
“Everyone was saying ‘he’s not the same you know,’ and I thought ‘yes he is, it’ll happen, it’ll change quickly.'”
Haaland’s goal-scoring prowess is reflected in his statistics. Of his 27 Premier League goals, 25 were scored from inside the penalty area, with four headers and seven from the penalty spot. Excluding penalties, Haaland still led the league with 20 goals, one ahead of Aston Villa’s Ollie Watkins and his City teammate Phil Foden.
Former Manchester City and England forward Daniel Sturridge praised Haaland’s consistency, saying, “Haaland’s numbers… that’s stuff you do when you’re at school. It’s a goal, a game. That’s not what you do in the Premier League in your second season. We have to give him the utmost respect and credit for what he has done.”
Seventeen of Haaland’s 27 goals came in the second half of matches, with 12 scored between the 61st minute and the final whistle.
Among players who scored two or more goals this season, Haaland averaged a goal every 26 touches, 12 more than any other player.
Haaland scored 20 Premier League goals with his left foot this season, making it only the third time a player has scored 20 or more left-footed goals in a single season.
Remarkably, one of the previous two occasions was also Haaland last season, when he scored 23 goals with his stronger foot.
A Bright Future Ahead
Haaland has averaged a goal every 85 minutes in his Premier League career, the joint-highest in Premier League history alongside Richard Walker, who scored two goals in six games for Aston Villa.
This season, he averaged a goal every 95 minutes. Among players with five or more goals, only Aston Villa’s Jhon Duran had a better average at 92 minutes.
Haaland’s season included two Premier League hat-tricks and four goals against Wolves on May 4. He finished the season with 41 goals for club and country, including five against Luton in the FA Cup.
In addition to his scoring feats, Haaland provided five Premier League assists this season.
Former City forward Sturridge believes Haaland’s best is yet to come. “Haaland will only get better,” he said. As Manchester City celebrates another successful season, their rivals will undoubtedly be wary of Haaland’s potential to continue his incredible form in the 2024-25 season.
