Investigation: Errol Musk Accused of Abusing Children, Stepchildren

Errol Musk Accused of Abusing Children, Stepchildren

Errol Musk, the 79-year-old father of Tesla and SpaceX founder Elon Musk, is facing disturbing allegations of sexually abusing five of his children and stepchildren. These accusations, which span more than three decades, were revealed in a detailed investigation by The New York Times. The report draws on court records, police files from South Africa and California, interviews with family members, social worker notes, and personal correspondence.

While the claims are extremely serious, Errol Musk has strongly denied them, calling the allegations “nonsense” and suggesting they are motivated by attempts to access his son Elon’s fortune. Despite multiple police investigations, Errol has never been convicted of a crime.

Early Allegations in the 1990s

The earliest known allegation surfaced in 1993. According to family members interviewed by The New York Times, Errol’s stepdaughter, Jana Bezuidenhout, then just four years old, told relatives that he had touched her inappropriately. The case reportedly alarmed family members, who raised concerns with local authorities.

Although police were alerted, prosecutors later dropped the case due to insufficient evidence. At the time, Errol denied wrongdoing and maintained that the incident was a misunderstanding.

A Pattern of Accusations Over the Years

The investigation shows that this was not an isolated claim. Over the years, several of Errol’s children and stepchildren accused him of inappropriate behavior:

  • 2000s incident with Jana Bezuidenhout: A decade after the initial allegation, Jana accused Errol of entering her room and sniffing her underwear. He denied the claim, saying he was simply cleaning her messy room.
  • Allegations involving other children: Family members reported that Errol abused two of his daughters and a stepson. Again, police were informed, but no convictions followed due to what authorities described as lack of evidence.
  • 2023 incident: According to The New York Times, a five-year-old son told relatives that his father had groped him. A social worker reportedly became involved, and family members escalated concerns.

These recurring claims created deep fractures within the Musk family and raised questions about how authorities handled repeated complaints.

Police Investigations in Two Countries

According to the Times report, at least three separate police investigations have taken place — some in South Africa, where Errol lived for decades, and at least one in California, where he later spent time.

Two of the cases were closed without charges. The third’s outcome remains unclear. The lack of legal consequences has fueled debates about whether evidence was mishandled or whether claims were too difficult to substantiate in court.

Denials from Errol Musk

In interviews, Errol Musk has categorically denied abusing his children or stepchildren. Speaking to The New York Times, he dismissed the accusations as “fabricated” and claimed some relatives are motivated by money, hoping to pressure Elon Musk into financial settlements.

“There was no evidence because this is nonsense,” he said, insisting he was only aware of one formal complaint. For other allegations, he offered explanations, such as the incident where he claimed to be cleaning a messy room.

Despite repeated denials, the accusations continue to overshadow his family relationships.

Family Tensions and Financial Strains

The Musk family has long been described as fractured and complicated:

  • Errol fathered Elon, Kimbal, and Tosca Musk with his first wife, Maye Musk, a Canadian-South African model and dietitian.
  • Later, he married Heide Bezuidenhout and became stepfather to Jana. After Jana became an adult, Errol fathered a child with her — a relationship that has drawn global scrutiny.
  • Some family members have written letters to Elon Musk over the years, pleading for him to intervene. A relative reportedly sent him a five-page letter in 2010, stating that “we daily see these children suffer.”
  • In 2023, reports suggested that Elon was paying $1,700 per month to support one of his former stepsisters, though neither he nor his representatives commented publicly.

Elon himself has spoken harshly about his father in past interviews, calling him a “terrible human being” who committed “almost every evil thing you could think of.”

Media Reaction and Public Scrutiny

The explosive New York Times investigation was quickly republished by global outlets including Page Six, The Guardian, and ABC News Australia. Headlines have focused not only on the accusations themselves but also on the strained relationship between Elon Musk and his father.

The revelations have sparked widespread discussion about:

  • Family secrecy and accountability in wealthy households
  • Challenges in prosecuting abuse cases with limited evidence
  • The role of wealth and power in shaping outcomes when allegations arise

What Remains Unresolved

As of now, Errol Musk:

  • Has never been convicted of any sexual abuse charges
  • Denies all accusations, framing them as false claims tied to money disputes
  • Remains estranged from his son Elon, who has not issued a statement in response to the latest investigation

Meanwhile, the allegations continue to surface decades after the earliest reports, leaving questions about justice, credibility, and accountability unanswered.

The case of Errol Musk underscores the complex intersection of family, power, and allegations of abuse. On one hand, serious claims have been raised by multiple children and relatives, supported by letters, police reports, and testimony. On the other hand, Errol Musk has consistently denied any wrongdoing and no court has found him guilty.

For Elon Musk, one of the world’s most influential figures, the scandal highlights a deeply fractured family past — one that continues to shadow his public life even as he shapes the future of technology and space exploration.
