HMPV Outbreak: India, Malaysia and Hong Kong on Alert Amid China Surge

HMPV Outbreak in China

The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) has confirmed three cases of Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) in India. The Union Health Ministry, in a statement on Monday, revealed that two of these cases were detected in Karnataka and one in Gujarat. These cases were identified through routine surveillance for respiratory viruses.

In Bengaluru, a three-month-old baby, now discharged, and an eight-month-old, who is still recovering at a hospital, were the two reported cases. Meanwhile, a two-month-old in Ahmedabad was also found to be infected.

The Union Health Ministry assured that it is closely monitoring the situation using all available surveillance systems. ICMR will continue tracking HMPV trends throughout the year. Additionally, the governments of Karnataka, Maharashtra, and Delhi have issued guidelines to strengthen preparedness and address potential health challenges posed by HMPV.

Surge in China Raises Global Concerns

China is grappling with a significant surge in HMPV cases, resulting in overcrowded hospitals and growing concerns of a wider outbreak. Social media platforms have been flooded with images and videos showing people wearing masks in hospitals, signaling the severity of the situation.

Alongside HMPV, China is also dealing with other respiratory illnesses, including influenza A, Mycoplasma pneumoniae, and COVID-19. Despite these challenges, neither Chinese authorities nor the World Health Organization (WHO) have declared a state of emergency.

Beijing, in a press statement, sought to reassure the public. Mao Ning, spokesperson for China’s Foreign Ministry, stated, “Respiratory infections tend to peak during the winter season. I can assure you that the Chinese government cares about the health of Chinese citizens and foreigners coming to China. It is safe to travel in China.”

The WHO has yet to issue an official statement on the outbreak in China, further underlining that no emergency status has been declared.

HMPV Cases in Hong Kong and Malaysia

Hong Kong has reported low numbers of HMPV infections but remains vigilant in monitoring the situation, especially as neighboring China experiences a surge.

In Malaysia, HMPV cases have seen a sharp rise. In 2024, the country reported 327 cases, reflecting a 45% increase from the 225 cases recorded in 2023. The Malaysian Health Ministry has urged the public to adopt preventive measures such as frequent handwashing, wearing face masks, and practicing respiratory hygiene by covering the mouth and nose when coughing or sneezing.

HMPV: A Respiratory Virus of Concern

Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) belongs to the Pneumoviridae family, which also includes viruses like respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), measles, and mumps. Initially identified by scientists in 2001, HMPV can cause both upper and lower respiratory tract infections.

The virus primarily affects children, the elderly, and individuals with weakened immune systems, making these groups particularly vulnerable to severe illness.

Japan’s Influenza Outbreak Amid Global HMPV Surveillance

Japan is also keeping a close watch on HMPV developments as the country grapples with its own influenza outbreak. In mid-December 2024, Japan reported over 94,000 flu patients, which has added to the burden on its healthcare system.

The recent surge in HMPV cases across China, Malaysia, Hong Kong, and India highlights the importance of global vigilance and timely preventive measures. While no state of emergency has been declared, public health authorities in affected countries are taking steps to monitor and manage the situation. Individuals are advised to maintain proper hygiene practices and stay informed about local health updates to mitigate the spread of respiratory viruses like HMPV.

As winter progresses, the focus remains on robust surveillance and international cooperation to address the rising wave of respiratory infections.
