When Lakshmi Knocks and Lanterns Rise: Kojagari Lakshmi Puja 2026 and Probarona Purnima

Kojagari Lakshmi Puja 2026

Kojagari Lakshmi Puja 2026 lands on today, October 25, the first full moon after Durga went home on Bijoya Dashami. In Dhaka, the Purnima tithi kicks in around 12:25 PM, and the midnight puja window runs from 11:17 PM to 12:08 AM. Same night, same moon, Buddhist families mark Probarona Purnima 2026 with candles and paper lanterns.

Two festivals. One sky.

I’ve watched this night play out in Dhaka for years, and here’s the honest version: it’s the smallest puja of the season and easily the most personal. No giant pandal, no loudspeakers—just a swept floor, a rice paste alpana, and somebody’s grandmother reading the panchali while the khichuri cools.

Kojagari Purnima Time in Dhaka: Which Clock Should You Trust?

The Dhaka numbers above come from Drik Panchang’s Dhaka page, and they match my own sunset to sunrise math. Kojagari Lakshmi Puja 2026 follows one simple rule: Purnima has to be running at night. On October 25, it runs all night.

Here’s the catch. You’ll find at least three different “auspicious” windows online, and one popular Bengali calendar page lists a midnight window of 11:38 PM to 12:28 AM Indian time—roughly 40 minutes off Drik’s Kolkata figure.

Does that matter? Less than you’d think.

The truth is, most Bengali homes don’t wait for midnight. They start after sunset (5:24 PM in Dhaka) during Pradosh, once the moon’s up and the lamps are lit. Nishita matters if your family keeps the strict vigil or if your priest says so. Bisuddha Siddhanta and Gupta Press panjikas also differ by a few minutes, so ask your purohit which one your family follows and stop scrolling.

Quick tip: the tithi doesn’t end until 10:11 AM Monday in Dhaka. If you’re fasting, you’ve got all night.

What Kojagari Actually Means and Why the Vigil isn’t Optional

Kojagari comes from the Sanskrit “ko jagarti”—who is awake? Every grandmother tells the same story: on this full moon, Lakshmi walks from house to house and blesses the homes where someone’s still up. Dark house, locked door? She keeps walking. That’s the whole reason people stay awake for Kojagari Lakshmi Puja 2026.

The fast also goes by Kaumudi Vrat, and Drik Panchang ties it to an old vrat katha about a Brahmin named Valit.

Here’s what people miss. Bengali Lakshmi isn’t a gold and diamond goddess; she’s the goddess of paddy and the full rice store, with an owl at her feet and a grain basket in her hand. In a country where most families sit a generation or two from a farm, that makes sense. She’s the goddess of enough.

Not excess.

If you want a sharper take on what we should really be asking her for, our piece Letters to the Goddess makes that case well.

How Bengali homes celebrate Kojagari Lakshmi Puja 2026

The rituals for Kojagari Lakshmi Puja 2026 are simple. That’s the point. Here’s how it runs in most homes, from Old Dhaka to the Kolkata suburbs:

  • Alpana first: Women draw patterns with rice paste, plus a trail of small footprints from the front door to the altar. The footprints are Lakshmi’s way in. Don’t skip them.
  • Sora or idol: Bangal families (roots in what’s now Bangladesh) usually worship Lakshmi is on a painted clay plate called a sora. Ghoti families from West Bengal lean toward a clay idol. Both work, whatever your aunt says.
  • The bhog: Khichuri, labra, fried vegetables, narkel naru, til naru, muri, khoi and seasonal fruit. Some families add fish—Bengali Lakshmi doesn’t mind.
  • Lakshmir Panchali: Someone reads the verse story aloud, usually the oldest woman in the house, while the kids try not to fidget.
  • Conch and ulu: Shankha blasts and ululation open the puja.
  • Stay up: Share prasad with neighbors and keep at least one lamp burning past midnight.

Old Dhaka’s Shankhari Bazar and Tanti Bazar still stock most of what you need, and they’re usually cheaper than online shops.

Outside Bengal, the same moon wears other names. North India leaves kheer under the moonlight for Sharad Purnima, Odisha celebrates Kumar Purnima, Assam keeps the Kojagari vigil, and Braj calls it Raas Purnima.

Skip the gimmicks: where your money should actually go

Every year the marketing around Kojagari Lakshmi Puja 2026 gets louder. Jewelers push “Lakshmi Puja gold offers. ” Online shops sell ‘complete puja kits’ with a plastic idol, a printed alpana sticker and incense, priced like a dinner out for four.

Here’s the honest community take:

  • You don’t need gold: Nothing in the panchali asks you to buy jewelry this night. That’s Dhanteras marketing leaking into Kojagari.
  • Plastic Alpana stickers look cheap by 10 PM: They lift at the corners and slide on a freshly mopped floor. A bowl of rice paste costs almost nothing, and nobody’s grading your art.
  • Paid muhurat apps aren’t worth it: Drik Panchang’s free Dhaka page gives you the same times.
  • Spend on the food and the clay: Good rice and dal for the khichuri, fresh coconut for naru, a hand-painted sora from a local potter, and mustard oil for the lamp. That’s where the night actually lives.

Most first timers make the same mistake: they overbuy fruit and flowers that rot by Tuesday. Buy for the people who’ll actually show up.

Two Festivals, One Sky

Probarona Purnima 2026: the Buddhist Half of the Night

While Hindu homes wait for Lakshmi during Kojagari Lakshmi Puja 2026, Buddhist viharas fill with candles for Probarona Purnima 2026. It closes Barshabas, the three-month rainy season retreat that monks began on Ashari Purnima (July 29 this year). It’s the second biggest Buddhist festival in Bangladesh, after Buddha Purnima.

“Probarona” means letting go of the false and taking up the true. At the end of the retreat, each monk invites the others to point out any fault they saw in him. Think about that for a second—a whole community asking to be corrected instead of praised.

For lay Buddhists, the day brings flag raising, offerings at the vihara, the five precepts and alms for the monks. After dark, fanush (paper sky lanterns) rise over Chattogram, Rangamati, Bandarban and Cox’s Bazar, and in Ramu, crowds gather at Seema Bihar to send hundreds up together. In Dhaka, the International Buddhist Monastery at Merul Badda hosts a day-long program. The month that follows brings Kathin Chibar Dan, when families offer robes to the monks.

One safety note people learn the hard way: every fanush carries an open flame. Dhaka police asked people not to fly them during Buddha Purnima in 2019, and city rooftops are tangled with wires. Launch from open ground, keep a bucket of water close, and stay well away from power lines.

The two festivals share a night because they follow the same lunar calendar. We dug into that overlap in The Shared Light of Prabarana Purnima and Laxmi Puja.

Lakshmi Puja Holiday in Bangladesh and India: Who Actually Gets the Day Off?

Kojagari Lakshmi Puja 2026 isn’t a general public holiday in Bangladesh. And Sunday’s a regular workday here.

The 2026 government list marks Lakshmi Puja (October 25) as an optional holiday for Hindu employees, and Probarona Purnima (same day) as one for Buddhist employees. Each employee can take up to three optional days a year. Haven’t used yours? This is a good night to spend one, especially if you’ll be up past midnight.

Private sector staff have it harder. Your company decides, not the government list—so ask your manager this week, not on Sunday morning.

India’s a different story:

  • West Bengal: October 25 is a sectional holiday (it’s a Sunday anyway), and Monday, October 26 is a state holiday listed as “Additional Day for Lakshmi Puja.” District courts are already on their annual puja vacation.
  • Tripura: holiday trackers list Monday, October 26. Check the state notice before you plan travel.
  • Rest of India: no national holiday. Banks follow the RBI’s state lists.

What long-time celebrants wish someone had told them

Ask anyone who’s hosted Lakshmi’s night for twenty years, and they’ll give you the same five tips for Kojagari Lakshmi Puja 2026:

  1. Start the khichuri early. It thickens fast and scorches faster.
  2. Keep the fast light. Water and fruit are fine in most families, but ask before you assume.
  3. Don’t rush. The tithi runs until 10:11 AM Monday in Dhaka.
  4. Leave the door open a crack during the evening puja. Many homes still do. Lakshmi doesn’t knock on locked doors.
  5. Share the naru with your neighbors, Muslim and Buddhist friends included. In most Dhaka neighborhoods, they’ll drop by anyway.

Final Words

Kojagari Lakshmi Puja 2026 lasts one night. By Tuesday, the alpana will be smudged and the lanterns long gone. What stays is the habit the night asks of us: paying attention to our homes, our money and the people around us.

So on Sunday, light the lamp. Read the panchali. Look up at the lanterns.
