Eva Longoria Moves Family Abroad, Calls US ‘Dystopian’: ‘I’m Privileged’

eva longoria moves family abroad from us

Actress Eva Longoria recently announced a significant life decision: she and her family have relocated from the United States, now splitting their time between Mexico and Spain. Known widely for her role on Desperate Housewives, Longoria has spent the majority of her adult life in the U.S. but shared in a recent interview with Marie Claire that recent developments have driven her to seek a new chapter abroad.

Why Longoria Chose to Leave the U.S.

Longoria explained that the decision to leave was not sudden but a culmination of years of feeling a shift in the country’s social and political climate. “I had my whole adult life here,” she said, reflecting on her experiences in the U.S. “But even before [the pandemic], it was changing. The vibe was different.”

Her concerns grew stronger during the COVID-19 pandemic, which she says highlighted issues in society she could no longer ignore, including homelessness, rising taxes, and what she described as a “dystopian” atmosphere in some parts of the country, particularly in California. “It just feels like this chapter in my life is done now,” she added. While she didn’t explicitly criticize California, she hinted that ongoing challenges in the state contributed to her decision to seek a different environment for her family.

Political Climate and Disappointment in Recent Elections

One of the more personal factors in Longoria’s choice was the country’s political direction, which, for her, seemed increasingly unaligned with her values. She cited the recent U.S. elections as a tipping point. Reflecting on former President Donald Trump’s election and the impact it had on her perspective, Longoria described her reaction: “The shocking part is not that he won; it’s that a convicted criminal who spews so much hate could hold the highest office.” Her comments point to her disillusionment with the U.S. political landscape, suggesting a shift in her perception of the country’s values.

Longoria further shared her fears about what the future might look like under certain political influences, expressing worry for friends and family who remain in the U.S. “If he keeps his promises, it’s going to be a scary place,” she said, alluding to specific policies she finds troubling. Longoria also recalled her reaction to Trump’s 2016 election, describing a period of profound dismay: “I’ve never been depressed in my life. It was like, ‘Does my vote really matter? Am I really making a difference?’” Her comments reflect a loss of faith in the electoral process, an experience she admits left her feeling “untethered” from her core beliefs.

Privilege and Empathy for Those Who Can’t Leave

Aware that many Americans face economic or other restrictions that prevent them from making similar decisions, Longoria acknowledged her privilege in being able to relocate. “I get to escape and go somewhere,” she said. “Most Americans aren’t so lucky. They’re going to be stuck in this dystopian country, and my anxiety and sadness are for them.” Her empathy extends to those who may feel trapped or disempowered by circumstances, a sentiment she expressed with what she described as a sense of survivor’s guilt.

While Longoria feels fortunate to have options, her remarks underscore a sense of compassion for individuals who may feel increasingly anxious or disenfranchised by current events but who lack the means to make significant lifestyle changes.

Building a New Life in Mexico and Spain

Longoria’s decision isn’t merely an escape; it’s also about embracing a new way of life. Alongside her husband, José Bastón, and their six-year-old son Santiago, Longoria now divides her time between two culturally rich environments: Mexico and Spain. Although she has often traveled for work in Europe and South America, this change allows her to create a stable, family-centered life outside the U.S.

With a career that includes both acting and directing, Longoria often works internationally, which has contributed to her reduced presence in Los Angeles. This transition reflects a deeper interest in raising her family in environments that resonate with her cultural heritage and values, fostering a sense of connection with her roots in Mexico and her ties to Spain.

Looking Forward to a New Chapter as She Approaches 50

While relocating is a major decision, it also marks a period of renewal for Longoria as she approaches her 50th birthday. The actress expressed excitement about the future and a commitment to continued personal growth, sharing that she does not view age as a limitation. “For me, age is just a number, but I’m excited,” she told Marie Claire. “I refuse to believe my greatest success is behind me.” Her words reflect a hopeful outlook on her upcoming years, with a determination to create new memories and achievements.

Longoria’s life change symbolizes not just a geographical move but a personal journey to reconnect with herself and her values. In a time of uncertainty and divisiveness, her choice to seek a balanced, meaningful life for herself and her family underscores her desire to stay true to her principles, even if it means making significant adjustments.

A Broader Reflection on Changing Times

Eva Longoria’s story is one of self-reflection, privilege, and responsibility. She acknowledges the struggles and challenges facing the U.S. while also recognizing her ability to make choices that others may not have. Her comments about the U.S. political climate and social issues reflect the growing concerns many Americans feel. For Longoria, the move offers a fresh start and a chance to shape the next stage of her life in a way that aligns with her values and aspirations.

This period marks a new chapter, but her reflections serve as a broader commentary on the evolving nature of personal choice in an interconnected world, reminding audiences that every significant change begins with a single decision.
