Paris 2024 Olympics: 5 Tourist Traps You NEED to Know About

Paris 2024 Olympics

The much-awaited Paris 2024 Olympics will begin on July 26 and continue until August 11. For the first time in Olympic history, the Games will commence not in a stadium but on a river.

The grand opening ceremony of Paris 2024 will feature a spectacular procession of boats carrying around 200 delegations of athletes along the River Seine. This unique event is expected to attract thousands of spectators to the banks of the river to witness the spectacle.

Reports indicate that the small French city is preparing to welcome over 15 million spectators for the Summer Olympics. However, before the Games, several major problems have been identified that might cause issues for visitors to Paris.

Travel experts even recommend that tourists reconsider their plans to visit Paris during the Olympics unless they explicitly attend Olympic events. Postponing travel until after mid-September is advised to avoid these issues.

1. Bedbugs: A Growing Concern

One of the most severe issues in Paris is the surge of bedbug infestations. The French government is grappling with a nationwide bedbug problem, and numerous anecdotal accounts and viral posts on social media have heightened the public’s anxiety.

In response, government officials convened an emergency meeting to address the issue. While there has been widespread discussion on talk shows, pest-control experts maintain a measured stance, advising caution and preparedness for visitors.

Bedbugs are notoriously difficult to eradicate and can be a significant nuisance for tourists, potentially leading to discomfort and the need for costly treatments.

Travelers should take precautions such as inspecting their accommodations for signs of bedbugs and keeping their luggage elevated off the floor.

2. Overcrowding: An Unavoidable Challenge

Overcrowding is expected to be a significant challenge for visitors during the Olympics. Paris, which typically hosts approximately 90 million visitors annually, is projected to see an additional 15 million visitors during the Olympics.

This influx will result in exceptionally high levels of congestion. To mitigate the impact, authorities have created a particular traffic lane available only to specific vehicles for those willing to pay.

Nonetheless, tourists should be prepared for extended queues and slow services at major attractions like the Eiffel Tower and the Louvre. Public transportation systems are likely overwhelmed, making it difficult for tourists to navigate the city efficiently.

Those planning to visit Paris during this time should consider pre-booking tickets for attractions and allowing extra time for travel.

3. Road and Attractions Closures

Another major issue for visitors will be the closure of several roads and famous tourist attractions during the Olympics. The Champs de Mars, a well-known green space in Paris, has been shut down since June 3, with plans for a gradual reopening starting September 19.

Tourists may face disappointment if they find their favorite attractions closed or inaccessible for security and logistical reasons related to the Games.

Additionally, road closures and restricted access zones around Olympic venues will further complicate travel plans. Visitors should stay informed about the latest updates on road closures and plan their itineraries accordingly to avoid unexpected disruptions.

4. Expensive Flights and Accommodations

As with any large-scale event, visitors to Paris during the Olympics should be prepared for price hikes. The costs for accommodations, dining, and transportation will surge significantly.

Hotels and rental properties will likely increase their rates due to high demand, making it more expensive for tourists to find affordable lodging. Similarly, flight prices are expected to rise as more people travel to Paris for the Games.

Travelers should book their accommodations and flights well in advance to secure better rates and avoid last-minute price spikes. Exploring alternative lodging options such as vacation rentals or staying in nearby cities and commuting to Paris may also be beneficial.

5. Beware of Petty Crimes

Travel experts have also warned of potential upticks in petty crimes and scams aimed at tourists during the Olympics. Incidents like the “friendship bracelet scam” are commonly encountered at popular attractions like Sacre-Coeur.

Tourists should be vigilant and aware of their surroundings to avoid such scams. It is advisable to keep valuables secure and be cautious when approached by strangers offering unsolicited help or gifts.

Pickpocketing and other petty crimes tend to increase during significant events, so visitors should use anti-theft bags and avoid carrying large amounts of cash. Staying in well-lit, populated areas and being cautious with personal belongings can help mitigate these risks.

Summary

While the Paris 2024 Olympics promises to be an exciting and historic event, tourists should be aware of their potential challenges. From bedbug infestations and overcrowding to road closures, expensive accommodations, and the risk of petty crimes, several issues could impact visitors’ experience.

It is recommended that those not attending the Olympics consider postponing their visit to Paris until after mid-September to avoid these problems. For those who plan to visit, preparation and vigilance will be vital to navigating the challenges and enjoying the event.

Staying informed about local news, following travel advisories, and taking proactive steps to ensure personal safety and comfort can help make the trip to Paris during the Olympics a more enjoyable and memorable experience.
