Will Smith has reacted to the Academy of Motion Pictures and Arts’ 10-year ban on him attending the Oscars or any other academy function for hitting Chris Rock at the 94th Academy Awards. Following a meeting of the academy’s Board of Governors to discuss a response to Will’s behavior, the decision was made.
“I accept and respect the Academy’s decision,” Will said, according to PEOPLE.
Will will keep the Best Actor Oscar he won after the slap, and he will be eligible to be nominated for and win further Oscars during the next ten years, albeit he will be unable to accept them. As a result of the suspension, Will will not be presenting the Best Actress award at the Oscars next year, as is customary for the best actor winner. Will earned his first Academy Award for Best Actor in a Leading Role for King Richard.
“The 94th Oscars were meant to be a celebration of the many individuals in our community who accomplished outstanding work this past year,” the academy said in a statement. “However, those moments were overshadowed by the unacceptable and damaging behavior Mr. Smith displayed on stage.” We did not appropriately handle the situation in the room during our telecast. We apologize about this. We had a chance to set an example for our guests, fans, and Academy family throughout the world, but we failed miserably – unprepared for the unprecedented.”
“Today, the Board of Governors organized a meeting to determine how best to respond to Will Smith‘s behavior at the Oscars, as well as accepting his resignation,” the statement continued. Mr Smith will not be permitted to attend any Academy events or programs, in person or online, for a period of ten years beginning April 8, 2022, including but not limited to the Academy Awards.”

We’d also like to express our gratitude to our hosts, nominees, presenters, and winners for their poise and grace throughout the show.” The measure is “a step toward a wider goal of ensuring the safety of our performers and guests, and rebuilding faith in the Academy,” according to the Academy. “We also hope this can begin a time of healing and repair for all engaged and impacted,” the statement added.
During the week leading up to the conference, Will resigned from the Academy, calling his actions “shocking, hurtful, and unacceptable.” He lost the opportunity to vote for candidates and winners after resigning.
