Jimmy Kimmel started the 2024 Oscars with a long monologue, which did not sit well with fans of the awards show.
The host of the late-night talk show came back to host the 96th Oscar ceremony, marking the fourth occasion Kimmel has been chosen for this role. In 2017, 2018, and 2022, he served as the host. Remember the 2017 Oscars mix-up between “La La Land” and “Moonlight” for Best Picture?
After the Academy revealed Kimmel as the host for this year’s Oscars, fans wasted no time sharing their opinions. Now that the show has started, the negative comments are pouring in on social media.

Even though Kimmel hosted the awards show last year, which appeared to have pleased fans as the 2023 Oscars ratings increased (reaching an average audience of 18.8 million viewers—a 13% rise from the previous numbers), this year fans seem to be over the late-night talk show host.
Right after Kimmel finished his opening, his name started trending on X, the social media platform formerly known as Twitter, but unfortunately, not for a positive reason. He received criticism for the monologue, with many describing it as dull, overly lengthy, and lacking humor.

A user posted a picture of the dog that appeared during Kimmel’s monologue, stating it was the highlight of his opening.
The dog made an appearance during Kimmel’s discussion of Robert Downey Jr.’s Hollywood redemption story, where he mentioned that Downey Jr. is currently at a peak in his career.
Was it 20 years ago when Robert portrayed the antagonist in a film where Tim Allen transformed into a dog? If there’s ever a remake of that film, I know the perfect person to play Tim Allen. The negativity persisted as one user posted a GIF of Spongebob Squarepants on stage while the audience appeared uninterested.
One user compared Jimmy Kimmel’s comedy to the experience of waiting in line at a government agency.
Another Oscar viewer expressed their desire for Jimmy Kimmel to leave the stage.

While delivering his opening monologue, the awards show host made a playful remark about the absence of a best director nomination for “Barbie” director Greta Gerwig, which many believe was an Oscar snub.
“Barbie has become a symbol of empowerment, all thanks to Greta Gerwig, who many felt should have been nominated for best director this evening. Just a moment, please. You seem to be applauding, but it’s worth noting that she wasn’t the one you voted for. Kimmel mentioned during his monologue, “Don’t act like you had nothing to do with this.”

Jimmy Kimmel also mentioned the duration of films in 2023, jokingly saying, “There were so many fantastic movies that kept audiences glued to their seats this year, and I mean that quite literally.” Your films were lengthy this year. The top ten movies had an average duration of 2 hours and 23 minutes. That’s increased by 30 minutes compared to three years ago.
He mentioned that when he went to watch ‘Killers of the Flower Moon,’ he had his mail forwarded to the theater. It’s quite lengthy, you could make a trip to Oklahoma and take matters into your own hands.
