Historical Events on June 30

La Noche Triste (1520)

La Noche Triste, or “The Night of Sadness,” was a dark day for Spanish conquistadors in Mexico. In 1519, Hernán Cortés and his men arrived in the Aztec capital of Tenochtitlan. At first, they were welcomed by Emperor Moctezuma II. But soon, the Aztecs grew angry at the Spanish for their greed and violence.

La Noche Triste

On June 30, 1520, the Aztecs finally fought back. They attacked the Spanish, forcing them to flee the city. Many Spanish soldiers drowned as they tried to escape across the lake surrounding Tenochtitlan. During the chaos, Emperor Moctezuma II died. It’s not clear if he was killed by the Spanish or by his own people.

This event was a big setback for the Spanish. But it wasn’t the end of their conquest. Cortés regrouped and returned to defeat the Aztecs in 1521. The fall of Tenochtitlan marked the beginning of Spanish rule in Mexico, which lasted for 300 years.

Augsburg Interim (1548)

The Augsburg Interim was a law passed on June 30, 1548, by Holy Roman Emperor Charles V. It was an attempt to solve religious problems in Germany during the Protestant Reformation.

The law ordered Lutherans (followers of Martin Luther’s teachings) to return to Catholic practices. However, it did allow some exceptions. For example, Lutheran priests could stay married, and people could receive both bread and wine during communion.

The Augsburg Interim didn’t work well. Many Protestants refused to follow it. Catholics weren’t happy with it either. The law showed how hard it was to find a middle ground between the two religious groups. It remained in effect until 1552 but didn’t solve the religious divide in Germany.

Henry II Injured Jousting (1559)

On June 30, 1559, King Henry II of France was badly hurt in a jousting match. He was fighting against Gabriel de Montgomery, the captain of his Scottish Guard. During the fight, Montgomery’s lance broke. A piece of it went through a gap in Henry’s helmet and into his eye.

Henry II suffered for ten days before dying on July 10. This accident had a big impact on France. Henry’s young son became the new king, but he wasn’t ready to rule. This led to years of trouble in France, including religious wars between Catholics and Protestants.

Philip II Moves to El Escorial (1598)

On June 30, 1598, King Philip II of Spain moved to the El Escorial palace. El Escorial was a huge building that Philip had ordered to be built. It was part palace, part monastery, and part royal tomb.

Philip II Moves to El Escorial

Philip was old and sick when he moved there. He knew he was going to die soon. He wanted to spend his last days in this grand building he had created. Philip died at El Escorial on September 13, 1598, just three months after moving in.

El Escorial remains an important symbol of Spain’s power during Philip’s reign. It shows how much the Catholic faith meant to him and to Spain at that time.

William Questioned on Protestantism (1688)

On June 30, 1688, a group of important English nobles called the Whig Lords questioned Prince William III of Orange about his views on Protestantism. William was married to Mary, who was next in line to be Queen of England.

The Whig Lords wanted to make sure William would protect the Protestant religion in England. They were worried because the current king, James II, was Catholic and many people didn’t like his rule.

William’s answers must have satisfied the Whig Lords. Later that year, they invited William and Mary to take over the English throne. This event, known as the Glorious Revolution, helped establish a strong Protestant government in England.
