6 Useful Tips That’ll Help Your With DOT Physical Exam

DOT Physicals Exam

When you hit the road on your commercial vehicle, it’s not just you who’s at stake. There are a million ways the unexpected can occur. And, while you might do your best to drive safely, it is best to be in perfect health before taking up the job.

Keeping this in mind, the Department of Transportation (DOT) came up with a physical examination to help you maintain your commercial driver’s license and ensure you are mentally and physically fit as a commercial driver.

DOT physicals are mandatory physical examinations conducted by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) to assess the aspects of the health of a truck driver. The exam is considered to ensure that the driver is mentally and physically fit to drive the vehicle safely.

Generally, the exam is valid for two years. Meaning, you would have to apply for the exam after every two years if you want to maintain your commercial driver’s license.

If you are worried about clearing the examination, here are 6 useful tips to help you through it.

Keep all necessary documents in hand.

To ensure that things go smoothly, it is recommended to be ready with all the necessary paperwork and documents required for clearing the exam.

Essential paperwork includes:

  • All medical records
  • A full list of medicines prescribed to you
  • A complete list of your health conditions and their treatment

Be honest

It is essential, to be honest about the medications you take, symptoms you are experiencing, surgeries you had in the past, and any serious illness you are suffering from to ensure that your card is not revoked.

You must also inform the examiner about any substance issue.

Adopt a healthier lifestyle

You must get into a health routine three weeks before taking the test. To get started, stock your fridge with loads of green veggies, try exercising a little bit, monitor your sugar levels and blood pressure and prefer getting a good night’s sleep.

Steer clear of substances

If you consume illegal substances, it is recommended to stay away from them as you might be required to give a drug test during your examination.

Be regular on your medications

If you are thinking of stopping your medications altogether before the test, maybe it’s time to think again. Stopping your medications abruptly can make the symptoms worse. Taking your medicines on time is highly recommended if you wish to pass the DOT Physicals with flying colors.

Avoid unhealthy habits

If you are a regular smoker or have frequent sweet cravings, it is recommended to control your intake, so that your results aren’t affected.

There are a number of reasons why you might not pass the DOT Physical Examination. These could include any mental and physical condition that stops you from driving properly or might put others in harm won’t allow you to pass the examination.

Here are some instances where you might not pass the exam-

  • Poor vision than 20/40 in both eyes
  • Uncontrollable hypertension
  • Blood clots
  • Fainting spells
  • Narcolepsy
  • Diabetes where you are insulin-dependent
  • irregular heart rhythms
  • Positive drug test
  • Epilepsy or seizure disorder
  • Hearing impairment

Summing Up

There’s always hope even if you do not clear the exam. You can talk to the examiner if minor adjustments can be made to help you pass the test. For example, you can get a hearing aid if you have a hearing impairment.

Overall, it is essential to always be honest on your examination and adjust to healthy habits if you wish to maintain your commercial driving license.
