Barcelona is reportedly poised to sack coach Xavi Hernandez just weeks after he decided to stay at the club following a strong run of form.
According to Catalan radio station RAC-1 and confirmed by the daily newspaper ‘Sport,’ Barcelona President Joan Laporta has made the decision to relieve Xavi of his duties.
The Spanish media outlet ‘AS’ further reported that the club is already considering potential replacements for the coach.
Financial Difficulties and Controversial Comments
The reported decision to sack Xavi comes after he publicly highlighted Barcelona’s financial struggles compared to their rivals, new Spanish champions Real Madrid and other European giants.
This public admission reportedly upset the club’s top brass, particularly President Joan Laporta.
On Wednesday, Xavi stated, “Barcelona fans have to understand, we’re not in the same situation as those clubs.”
These comments were not well-received by the club’s management, contributing to the tension.

Laporta’s Absence and Xavi’s Defense
Adding fuel to the fire, Laporta did not travel with the team for their 2-0 victory at Almeria in La Liga on Thursday.
When asked about Laporta’s absence, Xavi reiterated his stance, stating, “They haven’t told me anything personally… We traveled with the sporting vice-president and more directors, all normally.
I said what I think is real, that we will fight for all the trophies, with a lot of hope and ambition, but that the situation is not easy. We are working very well, the club most of all, to change this situation.”

A Rocky Season for Barcelona
Despite winning La Liga last season, Barcelona has had a challenging year. The club failed to defend its title and exited the Champions League in the quarterfinals against Paris Saint-Germain.
Additionally, Real Madrid defeated Barcelona in the Spanish Super Cup final, and Athletic Bilbao knocked them out of the Copa del Rey.
As a result, Barcelona is set to end the season without a major trophy, which has further strained the situation.
Xavi’s Commitment and Laporta’s Previous Support
In January, Xavi announced his intention to leave at the end of the season.
However, following a strong run of form, he and President Laporta agreed in April that he would stay for the next campaign, with his contract set to expire in June 2025.
At that time, Xavi expressed his optimism, saying he was “full of hope” and that the support from fans, players, and particularly from President Laporta and sporting director Deco convinced him to stay.
Laporta also publicly supported Xavi, stating, “It’s great news that Xavi is staying. The team we have, which is (still) consolidating with very young players, needs that stability.
Xavi is a reference for young players, and we can see that — today, I’m especially pleased, and the board has unanimously supported this decision.”

Xavi’s Legacy at Barcelona
In November 2021, Laporta appointed Xavi, one of Barcelona’s all-time greatest midfielders, to take over for Ronald Koeman.
As a player, Xavi made 767 appearances for Barcelona, winning four Champions Leagues and eight La Liga titles, in addition to winning the World Cup with Spain.
During his tenure as Barcelona coach, Xavi led the team to win the Spanish Super Cup last season and secure the league title.
Despite these achievements, the current season’s lack of success and recent comments about the club’s financial situation have overshadowed his contributions.
Looking Ahead: Potential Replacements
As Barcelona contemplates Xavi’s future, the club is reportedly considering several candidates to replace him.
The potential change in leadership comes at a crucial time for the club, which is navigating financial difficulties and aiming to rebuild a squad capable of competing at the highest levels in both domestic and European competitions.
Final Verdict
The potential sacking of Xavi Hernandez marks a significant turning point for Barcelona.
While Xavi’s tenure has seen both triumphs and challenges, the decision to let him go underscores the pressures and complexities of managing a top-tier football club.
As the club looks ahead, the focus will be on finding a successor who can navigate these turbulent times and restore Barcelona’s competitive edge.
