Elon Musk Calls Off India Trip Due to Tesla’s Challenges in the US

Elon Musk's Fascination with OpenAI

Elon Musk has decided to delay his upcoming trip to India due to pressing issues at Tesla.

The announcement was made on X, the social media platform Musk acquired two years ago, last Saturday. The Tesla CEO was slated to meet with Prime Minister Narendra Modi in India early next week.

“Unfortunately, significant obligations at Tesla necessitate postponing my India visit, but I am eagerly looking forward to rescheduling it later this year,” Musk stated in his post.

Sources told Reuters that Musk planned to unveil a $2 to $3 billion investment initiative in India, despite the lack of extensive disclosure about the trip. Musk is keen on establishing a new manufacturing facility in India, a country where the electric vehicle (EV) market is relatively small but growing rapidly, according to the outlet.

Musk also recently highlighted India’s burgeoning EV market in a post on X, noting, “India commits to selling only electric cars by 2030. It is already the largest market for solar power.”

The postponement of his trip aligns with Tesla’s upcoming quarterly earnings release on April 23, a time when Musk and investors will address the company’s challenging start to the year 2024.

In early April, Business Insider reported that Tesla has been facing stiff competition in China’s EV market, with local competitors implementing aggressive pricing strategies. An equities strategist suggested to BI that these challenges in China played a significant role in Tesla’s missed delivery targets for the first quarter.

Following this, Tesla’s shares dropped by 7%.

By mid-April, Musk informed his staff through an internal memo that Tesla would be reducing its global workforce by 10%. Reports suggested that some employees received severance packages that were incorrectly low, complicating this announcement. Additionally, another wave of layoffs impacted the company’s recruiting department last Friday.

Moreover, Tesla has recently issued a recall for nearly 4,000 of its Cybertrucks due to issues with the accelerator pedals. Musk assured X that there have been no reported injuries or accidents related to this recall, adding, “We are just being very cautious.”
