Zac Brown, the frontman of the Zac Brown Band, has filed for a temporary restraining order against his estranged wife, Kelly Yazdi.
The legal action, filed on Friday, May 17, in Fulton County, Georgia, was prompted by an Instagram post that Brown alleges violates a confidentiality agreement between the two.
The post in question, shared by Yazdi on May 4, would have to be removed if the restraining order is granted.
Allegations of Confidentiality Violation
In his statement to PEOPLE and other news outlets over the weekend, Brown explained his decision: “After much deliberation, I took the steps necessary to enforce an agreement between us to maintain personal and business affairs in confidence and to protect my family from online harassment and speculation.
My only hope is for us to keep private matters private and to move forward with the mutual respect we had agreed to show one another when we parted ways.”
Kelly Yazdi’s Response
Kelly Yazdi responded to Brown’s court filing with a video posted on Instagram.
In her statement, she asserted her right to express herself freely and criticized Brown’s attempt to silence her: “No one — not even Zac Brown with all of his money, power, celebrity, and lawyers – may silence my right to freely express myself through art or, although I have to date declined to do so publicly, to speak about the circumstances of our pending divorce. …Like Zac, I have lawyers too, and I will tell my truth in court — where he has unnecessarily dragged me.”
The Contentious Instagram Post
The Instagram post at the center of the controversy features a lengthy caption that seemingly refers to Yazdi’s relationship with Brown.
Although Yazdi does not mention Brown by name, she describes behaviors that suggest emotional and psychological abuse, including “Projections. Gaslighting. Threatening. Stonewalling. Those are the ingredients of narcissistic abuse.”
According to court documents filed by Brown, Yazdi’s post is part of a pattern of behavior intended to exact revenge and includes defamatory and damaging statements about Brown, his family, and members of the Zac Brown Band and their families.
Background of the Divorce
Brown and Yazdi separated only four months after getting married.
They confirmed their split in a statement in December 2023, acknowledging their ongoing divorce proceedings.
“We are in the process of divorce. Our mutual respect for one another remains.
We wish each other the best and will always appreciate our time together. As we navigate this personal matter, we simply request privacy during this time.”
Legal Implications and Next Steps
If the restraining order is granted, Yazdi will be required to remove the Instagram post and refrain from making any further defamatory statements.
The case highlights the ongoing tension between the former couple and the legal complexities surrounding their divorce.
Both parties are prepared to contest the matter in court, each asserting their rights and seeking to protect their interests.
As this situation unfolds, it serves as a reminder of the challenges that public figures face in managing private disputes under the scrutiny of public and media attention.
The outcome of Brown’s restraining order request will likely set a precedent for how similar cases are handled in the future, particularly regarding the intersection of personal privacy and free expression on social media platforms.
