William Shatner’s Bold Warning to Katy Perry, Gayle King Before Space

William Shatner space warning Katy Perry Gayle King flight

William Shatner, the legendary “Star Trek” actor, had some unforgettable words of advice for Gayle King as she prepares to go to space with pop star Katy Perry and others. During a recent interview on CBS Mornings, Shatner didn’t hold back while sharing what to expect—and much of it was both hilarious and slightly alarming.

In 2021, Shatner made history by becoming the oldest person to travel to space at the age of 90. He flew aboard Jeff Bezos‘ Blue Origin New Shepard rocket. Now, he’s passing on his experience to King, 70, who will soon board a similar spacecraft.

“You’re Going to Think You’re Going to Die”

The conversation began lightheartedly, with King recalling how “euphoric” Shatner looked after his return from space. But things took a turn when he joked about King’s red dress, saying, “We don’t want any blood, Gayle.” Though meant in jest, it was the first of many moments that made King visibly nervous.

Shatner then warned her about the intense G-forces at launch, saying, “You’re going to think, ‘I’m going to die.’ But you’re not going to die, Gayle! You’re on an adventure!”

King laughed nervously but admitted, “You are scaring the bleep out of me now!”

Handling the Fear and Embracing the Moment

Shatner advised King to “take control of your emotions” and treat the flight as a once-in-a-lifetime experience. “Say a mantra,” he suggested, adding that meditation helped him before his own journey. King said she had already been meditating and had a mantra ready to keep herself calm.

Despite her nerves, King said she was focusing on the bigger picture and pushing herself far beyond her comfort zone. “It’s the adventure of a lifetime,” Shatner reminded her.

No Bathroom Breaks—Just Diapers

As the segment came to a close, Shatner offered one final, very practical tip: prepare for the long wait without access to a bathroom. “There’s no bathroom facilities,” he said. “So they’re going to give you diapers.”

Though it made the crew laugh, it was a reminder of just how unusual—and challenging—space travel can be.

A Rare View of Earth and Weightlessness

Shatner also reflected on the feeling of weightlessness, saying there are “no words in the English language” to describe it. “It is the strangest feeling,” he shared. “Not even swimming compares.”

He encouraged King to look out the window as much as she can. “The voyage is over so quickly,” he said. “You want to remember what you saw.”

An All-Female Historic Mission

King’s upcoming flight is part of an all-female crew led by Lauren Sánchez, Jeff Bezos’ fiancée. Katy Perry, film producer Kerianne Flynn, NASA rocket scientist Aisha Bowe, and civil rights activist Amanda Nguyen will also be onboard. Their mission is scheduled for April 14 and marks a significant moment in the history of women in space.

Adventure Awaits

Though William Shatner’s words were filled with both humor and blunt honesty, his message was clear: space travel is emotional, intense, and unforgettable. For Gayle King, Katy Perry, and the rest of the crew, it’s a chance to step out of their comfort zones and into history. As Shatner wisely said, “You’re on a voyage of exploration about your nature.”
