Top 15 Millennial Fashion Trends Coming Back in 2024

millennial fashion trends

In case you haven’t noticed, Y2K fashion is quite popular right now.

These appearances are nothing new to those who grew up around the turn of the century. In fact, millennials may be cringing at the thought of their tacky high school attire turning into viral fashion content on TikTok these days.

Early 2000s fashion styles that we never imagined would see the light of day again are being endorsed by Gen Z trendsetters and celebrity influencers, from Paris Hilton’s Juicy Couture tracksuits to the low-slung statement belts that seem to have no practical use.

1. The baby tee

The baby tee is back, whether you like it or not. You might recall seeing the iconic cropped T-shirt worn by stars like Paris Hilton and Britney Spears in the early 2000s. A key component of every millennial girl’s wardrobe, the baby tee frequently featured a smart or sarcastic statement printed on it. In 2024, Gen Z will have gladly taken up the baby tee and restored it to its former splendor.

2. Ballet flats

Should the smell of feet bother you, it could be because you devoted a significant portion of the early to mid-2000s to deodorizing your ballerina flats. One of the most recognizable shoe styles of the era, the ballet flat gained even greater appeal with the introduction of American designer Tory Burch’s distinctive Reva model. Over time, their popularity faded, even though it looked like every girl owned a pair. But as we all know, trends come and go, and the ballet flat is making a comeback after 15 years. Given that comfort is king and that celebrities like Nicky Hilton and Jennifer Lopez have been seen sporting them, we can definitely see this style lasting for at least a few seasons.

3. Velvet tracksuits

Velvet tracksuits

The early 2000s were defined by the Juicy Couture tracksuit, if one piece of clothing can be considered to represent a generation. Though it didn’t quite catch on in the 2020s, the divisive band did a great job of trying to reclaim its previous prominence. The sightings of celebrities serve as proof. Dare we say we kind of enjoy it? SZA, Paris Hilton, and Dua Lipa have all been sighted pushing up this trend once more.

4. Bucket hats

It would be impossible to talk about Y2K fashion without acknowledging the bucket hat. At the time, hip-hop musicians like Missy Elliott were primarily responsible for the popularity of bucket hats, and the 1990s musical group Jamiroquai was often associated with an especially oversized bucket hat. Influencers and celebrities from the modern day, such as Bella Hadid, Rihanna, and Hailey Bieber, are drawing inspiration from the noughties to revive the bucket hat.

5. Chokers

The classic accessory of the early 2000s was a choker. Growing up at that time, millennial women will probably recall wearing their tube tops with a black velvet choker or a choker with tattoos. In the wake of the Y2K fashion trend, chokers made a huge comeback. These days, influencers and celebrities are particularly fond of flower chokers or corsage chokers, which give any ensemble the ideal amount of feminine flair.

6. Vests and Waistcoats

Another fashion item that was frequently linked to the naughties was the vest or waistcoat. Supermodel Kate Moss made every millennial girl jealous in the 1990s by pairing a structured vest with a more laid-back item like cut-off shorts. Since then, designers like Anthony Vaccarello of YSL have brought the vest back and given it new life. As a result, fast-fashion stores’ shelves are overflowing with vests, albeit with updated style that reflects a more contemporary way to wear the Y2K staple.

7. Monogrammed bags

A purse with a monogram shouts early 2000s like nothing else. The trend reached unprecedented heights thanks to the contributions of Coach, Dior, and Michael Kors, and no millennial woman was safe from blowing her whole paycheck on the coveted Coach Demi Bag. Since then, the company has brought the bag back, this time in a sleeker version made of their signature jacquard monogram fabric. Dior also brought back their Y2K-era It bag. The Dior Saddle bag has gained popularity among influencers and celebrities, demonstrating the enduring appeal of 2000s nostalgia.

8. Tube tops

A-list celebrities frequently wore tube tops on the red carpet in the early 2000s. Particularly popular among young Hollywood stars like Britney Spears and Victoria Beckham was the tube-top trend. The tube top, which was once among the less embarrassing fashion fads, has been revived and elevated to a fashionable status by Gen Z influencers.

9. Cargo pants

Cargo pants

After being out of style for a number of years, cargo pants made a comeback when skinny jeans started to lose popularity. Every millennial owned a pair of baggy cargo trousers in their closet during the height of this craze. These days, cargo trousers are making a huge comeback. They come in a range of forms and designs, from fitting, more sophisticated versions to the wide-leg JNCO-style cargos that defined 1990s suburban adolescence.

10. Statement belts

11. Corsets

The nostalgic practice of turning underwear into go-out tops has finally returned to fashion, much to the delight of millennials. The sensual top has made a comeback, but with a little more wearability. Corsets were a major component of the early 2000s fashion zeitgeist. Both the materials and the boning are typically less constrictive on the body. The trend is frequently seen on celebrities like Olivia Rodrigo, whose stage attire frequently evokes Y2K enthusiasm.

12. Uggs

Although there was a brief dip in the popularity of the recognizable shearling-lined boot, Uggs never really vanished. Uggs were an essential component of every girl’s millennial outfit in the early 2000s. No matter what kind of clothing you were wearing—skirts, jeans, or track pants—Uggs were a totally appropriate choice for shoes. It’s hardly shocking that they’ve regained relevance thanks to a few updated styles with chic platform soles. Supermodels like Bella and Gigi Hadid supporting the new Ugg products is also helpful.

13. Pleated miniskirts

If you needed more proof that Y2K fashion is back, just visit hip Gen Z retailers like H&M and Urban Outfitters. You’ll definitely see a lot of pleated miniskirts as one trend. The pleated mini is a classic piece of fashion history that people who grew up during the Spice Girls period would know, even if you just think it’s a cute new trend.

14. The Baguette bag

Possible initial inspiration of the Baguette bag could have been Carrie Bradshaw, the fictional but equally influential protagonist of Sex and the City. Her idealistic persona appeared to be clinging to the original Fendi Baguette as she strolled through New York City. For a number of years, the Baguette was overshadowed by other fashionable bags; nevertheless, in 2019, Fendi brought back the classic piece, which seems to spark a renewed interest in the essential millennial item.

15. Low-rise jeans

The trend of low-rise jeans has always generated controversy. Even while the early to mid-2000s were undoubtedly dominated by the uncomfortable pants trend, most millennials would concur that it was a trend they didn’t want to see come again. Nevertheless, cycles of fashion and trends don’t always make sense, and low-rise jeans have made a comeback, burdening a new generation with the incessant need to draw up their waists.
