Shannen Doherty, Beloved ‘Beverly Hills, 90210’ Star, Passes Away at 53

Shannen Doherty Dies at 53

Shannen Doherty, known for her iconic role in the high school drama “Beverly Hills, 90210,” passed away on Saturday after a courageous battle with breast cancer that spanned several years. She was 53 years old.

The news of Doherty’s passing was confirmed by her publicist, Leslie Sloane, who expressed profound sorrow. “It is with a heavy heart that I confirm the passing of actress Shannen Doherty. On Saturday, July 13, she lost her battle with cancer after many years of fighting the disease,” Sloane stated.

A Long and Courageous Battle with Cancer

Shannen Doherty’s journey with breast cancer began in 2015 when she was first diagnosed. After two years of intense treatment, she went into remission. However, in February 2020, court documents from a lawsuit Doherty filed against her insurance company revealed that her cancer had returned and progressed to Stage 4. This stage of cancer is known for being incurable, indicating that it had metastasized to other parts of her body.

In an emotional interview with “Good Morning America” at the time, Doherty shared the weight of her diagnosis. “There are definitely days where I say, ‘Why me?’ And then I go, ‘Well, why not me? Who else besides me deserves this?’ None of us do,” she reflected, illustrating the deep internal conflict and resilience she experienced.

Revelation of Cancer’s Spread to the Brain

In June 2023, Doherty took to Instagram to share another heartbreaking development in her health. She revealed that her cancer had spread to her brain, a condition that significantly complicates treatment and prognosis. “On January 5th, my scan showed Mets in my brain,” Doherty wrote, accompanied by a video of her receiving radiation therapy.

Her post continued to shed light on her fears and the emotional turmoil she faced. “My fear is obvious. I am extremely claustrophobic, and there was a lot going on in my life,” she admitted. “But that fear…. The turmoil….. the timing of it all…. This is what cancer can look like.”

Early Life and Rise to Stardom

Born on April 12, 1971, in Memphis, Tennessee, Shannen Doherty was the daughter of a beauty salon owner and a bank employee. Her family relocated to Los Angeles when she was a child, a move that paved the way for her entry into Hollywood. By the age of 10, she had made her acting debut on the series “Father Murphy.” Her talent caught the attention of series producer Michael Landon, who cast her in the popular show “Little House on the Prairie” as Laura Ingalls Wilder’s adopted daughter, a role she played for 18 episodes.

This early exposure led to a series of roles, including a prominent three-year stint on the family drama “Our House” from 1986 to 1988. She also starred in the cult classic high school dark comedy “Heathers” in 1989, further cementing her status as a rising star.

Breakthrough Role in ‘Beverly Hills, 90210’

Doherty’s career-defining moment came in 1990 when she was cast as Brenda Walsh in “Beverly Hills, 90210.” At just 19 years old, Doherty became a superstar, with her portrayal of the straight-laced but fiery Brenda Walsh resonating with audiences. The show quickly became a cultural phenomenon and a guilty pleasure for a generation of viewers.

However, her time on the show was not without controversy. Doherty developed a reputation for being difficult to work with, reportedly feuding with cast and crew members, particularly co-star Jennie Garth. These off-screen dramas made her as infamous as she was famous, with media coverage often focusing on her tumultuous relationships and behavior.

Reflecting on her departure from the show after its fourth season, Doherty told Entertainment Weekly in 2008, “The best thing that ever could have happened to me was I got off ‘90210’ when I did. It let me find a little bit of peace and discover who I was as a person. Not the person who the press made me out to be because I’d had a few bad experiences in my personal life, and I was struggling to figure out a bad husband or a bad boyfriend, and I was doing it under the spotlight, so I wasn’t reacting well to any of it. I really wasn’t. And I know that.”

Tributes from Co-Stars and Friends

Jason Priestley, Doherty’s co-star from “Beverly Hills, 90210,” expressed his sadness on social media, describing her as “a force of nature” and saying, “I will miss her.” Alyssa Milano, who worked with Doherty on “Charmed,” also paid tribute, acknowledging their complicated relationship but expressing deep respect and admiration. “It’s no secret that Shannen and I had a complicated relationship, but at its core was someone I deeply respected and was in awe of,” Milano said. “She was a talented actress, beloved by many, and the world is less without her. My condolences to all who loved her.”

Continued Success and Personal Struggles

After leaving “90210,” Doherty appeared in several films and reunited with producer Aaron Spelling for the series “Charmed.” She starred alongside Alyssa Milano and Holly Marie Combs, playing a witch, a role that rekindled some of the early magic of her career. Despite on-set tensions, Doherty stayed with the show for three seasons before leaving, but not before directing three of the final episodes in which she appeared.

Doherty’s personal life was marked by challenges, including two divorces. Her first marriage to Ashley Hamilton, son of actor George Hamilton, ended in divorce after just a year in 1994. Her second marriage to Rick Salomon was annulled in 2002, nine months after their wedding. In April 2023, Doherty filed for divorce from her third husband, photographer Kurt Iswarienko, whom she married in 2011.

Later Career and Reality TV Ventures

In the early 2000s, Doherty moved from one short-lived television series to another before finding a new niche in reality TV. In 2006, she hosted “Breaking Up With Shannen Doherty,” a show where she helped participants end their toxic relationships. This new role seemed to resonate with Doherty’s own experiences, as she had navigated through personal and professional challenges under the public eye.

Return to ‘90210’ and Final Years

Doherty’s connection to “Beverly Hills, 90210” remained strong throughout her career. She reprised her role as Brenda Walsh in the 2008 reboot “90210” for an extended guest-starring stint. In 2019, she joined the cast of “BH90210,” a dramedy where the original cast members played fictionalized versions of themselves as they tried to reboot their hit show. This return to her roots illustrated the lasting impact and deep connection she had with the role that defined her career.

Robert Thompson, director of the Bleier Center for Television and Popular Culture at Syracuse University, reflected on Doherty’s enduring association with Brenda Walsh. “It was not only that she was never able to escape the gravitational pull of that role, but that she kept going back to it of her own free will,” Thompson observed.

Legacy and Impact

Shannen Doherty’s passing marks the loss of a significant figure in the entertainment industry. She is the second major cast member from “Beverly Hills, 90210” to die young, following Luke Perry’s death in March 2019 due to complications from a stroke. Doherty will be remembered not only for her talent and iconic roles but also for her resilience and bravery in the face of immense personal challenges.

Her legacy is one of a talented actress who captivated audiences, navigated the ups and downs of fame, and faced her battles with cancer with courage and openness. Shannen Doherty leaves behind a lasting impact on television history and in the hearts of her fans and colleagues.
