Ravi Shastri was welcomed with loud cheers in the Indian cricket team’s dressing room after fielding coach T Dilip announced that the former India coach would hand out the best fielding award to Rishabh Pant.
Pant had taken three crucial catches and scored a valuable 42 off 31 balls in a nail-biting match against Pakistan.
As Shastri entered the room, Team India’s vice-captain, Hardik Pandya, prompted him to give a short speech.
Shastri, acknowledging the request, began by expressing his deep emotions regarding Pant’s journey.

Emotional Recollection of Pant’s Accident
“I had tears in my eyes when I read about his accident,” Shastri said, pointing towards Pant. He recounted the horrific road accident on New Year’s Eve 2022 when Pant’s car crashed into roadside dividers on the Delhi-Dehradun highway. The car rolled over multiple times before catching fire. Fortunately, onlookers managed to break the car’s glass and pull Pant out in time.
“It was even worse when I saw him in the hospital,” Shastri continued. “For him to come back from there and be back in the A zone, playing one of the biggest games, India vs. Pakistan, was so heartwarming.”
Praise for Pant’s Performance
Shastri praised Pant’s resilience and performance, especially his wicketkeeping skills during India’s six-run win over Pakistan in New York.
“Your batting, everybody knew what you are capable of, the X factor you have, but your wicketkeeping and the range of movement that you have got so quickly back after the operation is a tribute to how much you have worked hard,” Shastri said.
An Inspiration to Millions
Shastri emphasized how Pant’s comeback was not just a personal victory but an inspiration to millions around the globe.
“Not just for yourself, it’s an inspiration to millions around the globe that from adversity, from the jaws of death, you can snatch a win as well. Well done, fantastic, keep up the good work and keep going,” he added.
A Thrilling India-Pakistan Encounter
The match against Pakistan was a typical India-Pakistan thriller, with the game’s momentum swinging back and forth. After bowling India out for 119 in 19 overs, Pakistan was restricted to 113-7 in 20 overs.
Shastri reflected on the intense nature of the match, saying, “It was a typical India-Pakistan game, where the pendulum swung from one side to the other. It’s a game that put everyone on the edge, not just in the dugout or in the dressing room. In the end, it is the team that seizes the big moment, holds their nerves, that comes out on top.”
Ravi Shastri’s heartfelt words and Pant’s inspiring journey from a devastating accident to a match-winning performance serve as a testament to the spirit of resilience and the undying love for the game.
